Hello all. My name is Ross. I am a student at the university of Glasgow. I am a hyperlexic, somewhat of a minority within a minority. I was only diagnosed within the last two years. I have read over 10000 books in my life time and am working my way through the university library (11 floors of books!), I have 73% written recall.

Despite this, I have said less then 10000 words out load in my life time (31 years).

I worked a few terrible factory jobs before arriving at university.

I attempt to write creativly and to paint.

Hi Ross! Welcome to Wrong Planet! Check out the different forums here. They are interesting and helpful.

I am on disability now, but when working did factory, warehouse, office, retail, and a few other types of jobs, mostly as a temp. I didn't like most of the jobs, but at least they paid my bills. Although I never made much money, I also never had a credit card, so I never had any huge debts, either. I did appreciate having even the jobs I didn't like, because with my health problems, and my Asperger's Sydrome, it was hard for me to hold a job for any length of time, so I wasn't too fussy about the jobs, until my knees got too bad. After that I had to take sit down jobs only. Eventually I was unable to work, so I had to apply for disability a few years ago so I could keep paying my bills.

Life's not great, but I learned a long time ago that life is not perfect, and I manage to cope by keeping myself occupied. That really does help.

Don't worry too much about not talking much. I am a hermit type myself. I've learned to smile, nod, say hi, and wave to the neighbors, and to others as well. You don't have to be in a smiley mood--just do it. It cheers them up, and makes them feel more comfortable around you, and doesn't require a lot of effort.

For eye contact try looking at the bridge of people's noses at or just below eye level. You can also try glancing at and then away from the other people several times during any conversations. Are you a lip watcher? Because I process input better visually, I tend to watch people's lips while they talk, even though I am not deaf. Also, eye contact feels to aggressive and confrontational to me, and puts me out of my comfort zone.

Hope my suggestions help you and I hope you like it here at WP. You are among friends here. :-)

Thank you for your advice. However, I must respond to clear up a missconception. I do not speak, not due to shyness or a physical inability. I lack inclination to do so. Most people mistake me for a mute.

My gaze is steady and firm, perhaps a little too firm, I always look in the eye. I could win out any "Stare out" competion.
