Hey guys, I am new here... I need to rant... I need to talk... I don't know where to start.

I'm Val and I am the single mom of a beautiful 3 year old boy. When it rains it pours does not even begin to describe the month that we have had. It all started with criminal domestic violence, the father's visitation rights being revoked, pnuemonia and bronchitis for both of us, and now...autism.

I really thought that my son was just an incredibly funny guy...that is, until I took him to a play date with my best friends two year old that I hadn't seen in almost a year. I thought, man...her kid is a GENIUS! I praised her girl, praised her, and praised her some more. I told everyone in my family who knew my friend what a bright girl she had. She had been very small and had a lot of health problems at birth, I just could not believe how smart this little Einstein was!

I guess it slowly started to click after that. She was just "normal". An appointment with the Pediatrician confirmed my fears on Friday. He says we are being referred to a Developmental Pediatrician, but it takes a long time to get in. He also said we had to have a few sessions with a special needs nurse. Whatever that means.

Anyway, I've been a wreck and I wanted to talk to someone. I'm glad you took the time to read this.
Val

Hello coquette. Welcome to WP! Hope you like it here.

Depending on where you live, the Parents' Discussion forum can offer general and perhaps specific advice depending on where you live. :)

Welcome, Coquette!

That sounds harsh. :( I'm sorry so many things seem to be crashing down at once. I hope you'll be able to find the advice and support you're looking for here! At the least, you'll find a treasure trove of wisdom and experience to help you figure out all the confusing situations that are sure to crop up.

So I'm a little lost on one thing. Is it just your child that was diagnosed, or were you as well? Your profile says you have another spectrum disorder, but from your post it wasn't very clear.

If you don't think you're on the spectrum, you choose "Neurotypical." If you think you might have it but aren't sure, you choose "Not sure if I have it or not."

There's an option for family member of someone with autism.

Your son is still the same person that he was, before he received the Dx. He's the same child that he's always been. An autism Dx doesn't change that. Now that he has the Dx, you will be able to get him the help that he needs to succeed in life. It's autism. It's not the end of the world. I wish the best for you and your son. :)
