Hi there, I'm new to the forum. I don't have autism or Asperger's, but I have nonverbal learning disorder; it's similar in a lot of ways to Asperger's, and a lot of people consider it to be a part of the autism spectrum (though as far as I can tell, no one is really quite sure where it belongs). So I hope I'm still welcome here, even though I don't quite fit the mold (but does anyone, really?).
I was diagnosed when I was 12, but no one really put much stock in the diagnosis, so I didn't start researching it until recently. Once I did, I was amazed at how much it fit me. I'm mostly affected in the area of social interaction; it was a relief to figure out that there's actually a legitimate reason why I have so much trouble reading body language and often end up using the wrong tone of voice with people.
I also have a couple of traits that are more autism/Asperger's than NLD. For instance, my frequent obsessions with various topics - though less strong than the typical Asperger's kind, I think, but that could just be because I've always tried to suppress this tendency in myself. Lately, mine tend to be whatever I've been writing about lately (I'm a fiction writer); the downside to that is, a lot of these interests don't lend themselves well to extensive discussion. You can't exactly discuss post-nuclear scenarios or brainwashing techniques at the dinner table Hearing people talk about stimming was also something of a revelation for me (wow, other people do this "filling up my senses" thing too, and there's actually a name for it??), though I'm not certain that what I do is exactly the same thing. So I don't really fit neatly into any box, but I don't really mind.
I'm a fiction writer, as I mentioned above; I mostly write novels, though I haven't had any published yet. Spirituality and mysticism also interest me greatly. If there's anything else you want to know, just ask
