Hello everyone.

I'm an NT and have an 8 year old AS daughter, a 6 year old NT daughter and an NT wife.

I'm a teacher but have recently trained as a hypno-psychotherapist. I work as a therapist in evenings and weekends and hope, one day, to leave teaching for full-time work as a therapist. I seem to attract a large number of AS clients and NT clients with AS relatives. I would say that a quarter of my clients fall into these categories, a rather high proportion. I made no effort, until recently, to market myself as a therapist with a degree of understanding of ASD issues. It just seems to have worked out that way. Jung would call it synchronicity.

So, I'm here to increase my knowledge and understanding of issues faced by "spectrumites", both as a father and as a therapist. I hope that this doesn't bother anybody.

It's nice to be here. It looks like a good supportive forum and I look forward to talking to you all.

Best wishes

Paul

:(

I suppose I am here to study you a little. It's not how I would phrase it but I suppose that's what it is. It sounds horribly condescending doesn't it?! I don't mean it to be. I don't intend to just lurk here, watching you all. It'd be nice to interact too.

When my daughter was two I asked my wife, half in jest, "do you think A**** is autistic? She never holds eye contact with me." My wife shrugged it off at the time and I was more than happy to shrug it off myself.

As it turned out, my wife later decided to have her tested and it transpired out that she was AS. I then chose to remain in denial for a good while. I knew nothing of autism and while I had nothing against autists or aspies (not that I then knew the difference between them or anything else about them) I was heartbroken to think that my daughter would grow up having difficulties adjusting to an NT world. I got over it in time. My daughter is a lovely girl and since AS is a great part of who she is I realised that I had no good reason to deny that part of her.

I later began training as a psychotherapist. She wasn't a conscious factor in my decision to train but I did choose to write my dissertation on the topic of hypno-psychotherapy and AS. As soon as I qualified I began to attract an unusually large number of AS clients. I hadn't said anything in my marketing materials about my experience and dissertation of and on the condition. There was no reason for it other than coincidence or synchronicity.

So, I'm here because I want to:

a) understand more of what my daughter will face as she grows up
b) understand more of what my clients face on a daily basis

I realise that this is a long reply to a jokey response. Still, I'd hate to think that anyone felt offended.

Paul

Welcome to WP!

The site is set up also specifically for people with family members and friends on the spectrum.

But I refuse to run thru any mazes unless you replace the food pellets with Mike & Ikes.

I do like it here. Thanks!

I'm not so sure about Mike and Ikes. I had to look them up, having no idea what they were. I don't think we get them over here. They look nice though. I'll try and find some online.

So, you'll have to make do with the promise that I'll not wire you up to any electrodes so long as you co-operate.
