Hi, I'm mom to a 13 y/o adhd aspie and I'm slowly losing my mind. I've been lurking for awhile. I'm encouraging my son to check out the kids' section of WP, but lately anything I say to him is received poorly because he wants me to get out of his life. :roll:

Greetings and welcome to WP!

Gee, I don't know why everyone is so afraid of losing their mind and going crazy. I've been of that side of the fence for a long time now and I sort of like it over here. It's not as bad as everyone seems to think it is. Remember that old song that goes, "They're coming to take me away hee, hee, haa, haa, hoo, hoo! To the funny farm! . . ." Well, they tried that with me and it only made me a lot worse, so they finally kicked me out and sent me back home!

Anyway, on a more serious note, it sounds like your son is just behaving like a typical teenager. I think that it is part of the maturing process, where the child is beginning to demand their independance from the parents in preparation for their inpending departure from home. Maybe he will look at the website later on. Good Luck!

At thirteen, the discovery isn't going to be at all pleasant. Do you have any therapeutic options, or just the promise of a little bit of school support? If I'd found out at thirteen, I'd have dived deep into denial, I think. Sadly though, the best outcomes are likely to follow acceptance and enthusiastic commitment to whatever therapies crop up.

Patience, accepting that an autism diagnosis wasn't what we wanted, and tireless support are what's called for. Stay in touch.
