Basically, I'm Jo. Nice to meet you. I'm queer. Gender-confused. Depressive. A failed writer. I can't think of any more warning labels to stick on myself right now, so let's skip ahead to the part where I rant about my interests, yeah?

I am generally quite taken with fantasy, especially of the urban variety. Anything reminiscent of the sort of stuff Neil Gaiman does is a sure winner. I love creative worldbuilding, especially if it's anything like the miracle China Mieville pulled in 'Perdido Street Station'. Steampunk is fun, as is cyberpunk, as long as the setting is used to the benefit of the storytelling, instead of getting in its way. I adore the medium of animation, even though my love for it earns me strange looks from my peers. My favorite (nominally!) kids' show is 'Avatar: The Last Airbender'; that was actually one of my Big Aspie Obsessions when I first discovered it. I also love comics, especially webcomics. I'm a huge Gunnerkrigg Court fan, and -- yes - I will freely admit to being among Andrew Hussie's legion of Homestucks.

What else can I say about myself?

I . . .

I have to pee.

China Mieville? Never heard of him/her.
Perdido Street Station? Never heard of this.
Steampunk? Cyberpunk? What's the difference?
Avatar: The Last Airbender? Never saw it.
Gunnerkrigg Court? Never heard of it.

Homestucks? Never heard of this.

Either you're in another world or I'm just getting old! Welcome to Wrong Planet. :D

Spending most of my time on forums about my specific genres of fiction always makes me forget what an obscure niche they occupy. X-] Thank you for the welcome! I hope to become heavily involved with both the Wrong Planet community and the neurodivergent community as a whole.

I wasn't sure what the Peter Pan Complex was so I had to look it up. To wit:

Avoids responsibilities, people tell them they are childish and need to grow up, would rather live in their head than the real world, wants success to just happen to them, focuses on fantasies more than reality, believes they deserve to have whatever they want, life lacks direction, never know what to do next, does dumb things frequently, inconsistent performance, lazy, slacker, does the minimum to get by, does things without thinking, does not feel they have any reason to accomplish anything, tend to ignore or put off problems, believes fun is the most important thing in life, most people think they are crazy, forgets scheduled appointments, more past than future, gets attention through negative behavior.

Since it's not listed on ICD-10 or DSM-IV as a specific personality disorder, I've noticed that some consider it an offshoot or branch of sociopathy which is:

A personality disorder characterized by a lack of social responsibility and failure to adapt to ethical and social standards of the community.

This little tidbit is from SociopathWorld:

"The God question is interesting also. Since aggressives in general and Sociopaths in particular will never submit to anyone else, there can be no God. That would imply a power greater than theirs, an abhorrent situation. Ageing is a depressing phenomenon. Some try to pretend they have power over it with the "Peter Pan" syndrome. I always find it highly amusing talking to my Sociopath friends about the possibility of a God. The horror. Oh the horror."

Also, here's an essay called "Is Peter Pan a Sociopath?"
http://www.manic-expression.com/apps/bl ... sociopath-

I apologize for attempting to connect the two together. It's just a way for me to get my simple mind wrapped around the concept.

No need for apology! I find every facet of the subject fascinating, although I tend to use the term fairly loosely when I use it in reference to myself. I don't view myself as any more of a sociopath than, I think, anyone on the spectrum is (i.e., we all learn empathy with more difficulty than our neurotypical counterparts). For me, it's further complicated by the extreme disconnect between the personality I've constructed for myself over the years and who I am as a body. I know that doesn't make much sense, but it's a difficult concept to put into words. Basically . . . I can get all excited about starting a new creative project, but trying to translate that intent into action is like trying to teach a baby orca to walk on its fins. After so many years of trying to get that damn whale to walk, my brain has developed a habit of shutting down and regressing into "child mode" rather than keep at it. The "trainer" part of my personality, the part that wants to see me meet the expectations I hold for myself, is knocked out and I am reduced to animalistic needs for comfort and emotional quiet.

I fit most of the criteria for this "complex," but what I feel makes me different from the image painted by the Wikipedia article is my self-awareness. While my fear of time's passage, my difficulty handling responsibility and the like are all (painfully) present, I don't feel entitled to easy success. I've simply missed a few fundamental steps in my growth as a person, and I hate myself for not being able to fix it. The awful part is, this just makes me pull into myself more, and after years of this happening I can barely do anything except wish more and more fervently I were back in kindergarten.
