Hi!
I just found this site yesterday and thought I would give it a whirl. I am 33 and was just diagnosed with Asperger's after a lifetime of wondering why the heck I was so different from everyone else. I have always felt I didn't quite fit in, and wondered why my social skills were not what people expected them to be, especially since I was raised in such a proper, uptight military family. I always knew it extended beyond just personal weirdness, and I'm glad to finally have an answer.
So what prompted me to get tested after all these years? My 8 year old son was diagnosed with mild Asperger's in kindergarten and I was wondering where it came from. Being a psychologist myself, I was curious to see what my scores would be, so I tested for it and was diagnosed. It is a relief to know what has been going on all these years, and now I can look at these behaviors as part of the disorder and treat them rather than suffer with them and agonize over them.
Now comes the difficult part...being an aspie parenting an aspie! I have been doing OK for the last 8 years, but I'm sure you all know that as they get older the jungle gets thicker for some of our kids.
Glad to be here and to have support!
