Hey guys. I have been having severe problems with hypersensitivity to smells. I am also afraid of toxins to the point of avoiding them at ALL COSTS. We have found a medicine that should help called Effexor XR (Venlafaxine Extra-Release/XR). I am so scared of it hurting me that I will not take it. My parents want me to, but I am afraid of the side effects. Is there anyone else who has a problem like that? Anyone that can help? Thanks.

I had similar problems.
but i think you should take the pill's and only if the side effect shows you should avoid the usage...
but my exmple is a bit differnt in my coutry we didn't have any good medicine (i'm from lithuania it's a quite developed country but about 12years ago it was in quite a bad shape) :) so my cure was simply going outside... but this method isn't bulletprof...

i have been on something similar to effexor, pristiq. The first 2 weeks of adjusting to the meds are very difficult, there are side effects, but once settled it really helps. You cannot miss a dose or be very late or there will be side effects, but I am more stable and able to think clearly when I am on it. I am able to go back to school, and navigate the stress and distraction with out becoming depressed while on it.

Mike, your medication should always be between you and your doctor. Not between your parents and your doctor. If you have any concerns, talk to your doctor or another healthcare professional. This is not your parents' call to make, regardless of your age.

*IANAD but I would recommend fluoxetine and other first generation antidepressants over something like Effexor.

See the thread in general autism discussion (look it up in that sub-forum) about withdrawal symptoms from Effexor....be careful.
