Hi I'm new!

I was diagnosed Aspie last year and I was looking for a good Forum - Wrong Planet rings true to my ears, it's my daily experience - so here I am.

I like walking - it helps me think clearer - cycling too.

I enjoy watching (not playing) rugby and cricket (yes, I'm typically English but my Y-chromosome is Welsh).

I chose the name Arcturian because a psychic once told me I was from another planet 8) - if you believe in that sort of thing.

I'm at the mid-point of life (hopefully) and single again! - the wife left me 2 months after my diagnosis

Favorite subjects: I better say science as it's the day job, but I also like art, music, I like to write and hope to be a writer - it's my retirement plan; history and genealogy, and lots of other stuff I've accrued over the years.

I've started to walk/cycle around Wales which is a bit smaller than Massachusetts but easier to pronounce. I'm writing a book about it - I always find myself in peculiar scrapes and have already made a good friend.

I'm pretty sure my Dad is Aspie but he's too old to care, and my brother is but doesn't want to hear it. They're all in denial - even about me which is frustrating at times! Hey ho, at least I'm not with them 24/7. I always knew I was "special". In a way, I'm glad I wasn't diagnosed earlier because I've a lot to write about...

Clothing: middle of road!

How did you find this website? It's hard to miss it!

Job: scientist - I've built up a good professional reputation through blood, sweat and tears. My boss is glad of my diagnosis - it helps him understand my modus operandi! We're able to work around my more challenging areas and focus on my strengths. I guess I'm lucky, but the road here was difficult to say the least.

Plans for the future? To be happy and content - a little old cottage, a real fire, a glass of brandy and most importantly, an old friend to reminisce with...

Welcome! :D

What sort of scientist are you? I hope to be a scientist when I grow up! I have been told I am an alien too, hence L.A.lien! Walking also helps me think better and cycling, too, when I can sneak away my big brother's bike! haha.

Just nipped back online to find 3 replies already - thank you for a warm welcome :D

LAlien - I'm in good company then :-) I hope your dreams come to fruition, science is a great thing to be involved in. Best of luck for the future. I'm not a great scientist for sure, but my job is interesting - I'm a materials scientist/ chemist working in manufacturing - i like to get out of the office as much as possible and into the lab or down on the shop floor where it's really happening. It's a great feeling to be making something useful to humanity.

Anyway, I'd better be off to bed - I'm rubbish at sleep routine and usually don't get enough - I need my brain to be working for 8 hours tomorrow!

Ciao for now

welcome to wrong planet
I also like history, if you learned half the information on the matter that I know you could write enough books to fund your retirement.
So you say your a scientist; what type of scientist are you? A research type, an engineering type, a medical type, a corporate type, a technological type, an inventor type, etc... ?
Though congratulations on your diagnosis, hopefully you will be able to see benefit in it.

I'm a materials scientist with a chemistry background. I'm in R&D developing new products and supporting the manufacturing of current ones. They always come to me if they have processing problems, especially with coatings - I have an analytical chemistry background as well as coatings and polymers. I had a recent patent out so I guess you could call me am inventor at a push, but most of the time we edge forward bit by bit. The work we do is very technical and includes engineering details - chemical and process engineering skills that I've picked up along the way. We make speciality papers - so it's all fiber and coatings technology. I'd rather not go into any more detail than that due to company intellectual property!

I work with american colleagues regularly and we get on splendidly well. We're mutually amused by the contrasts of similarity and difference. Good fun.

I'm and having my official assessment in October, lots of mixed emotions.

I wish I had known earlier and then maybe my life could have been easier!

Got married 4 years ago. We had problems from the start as the real me came out and caused troubles.
We're still struggling and still together. but it's hard especially with a business and three kids.

My wife said to me after we got married she thought I was Asperger's ( her dad was a teacher/headmaster of a special needs school)
So I brought Tony Attwood Asperger's Syndrome. read the book in one night. It was shocking! I was so relieved and upset that I cried for hours.

TheeMill - you have my sympathy. The problems from the start of the marriage - we had that too. However, you seem to have an understanding wife whereas my wife had lost interest in making it work by the time I got diagnosed. The damage after 9 years of turbulent marriage had already taken its toll. The first arguement we had 2 months after the diagnosis and that was that. I think it could have been denial - she wasn't interested in knowing anything about Aspergers. However, at least we've kept things amicable - for the sake of our daughter. I get to see her every weekend which isn't bad. I rent a small place near where i work and still pay half the mortgage on "our" house (for no more than a couple of years i said) so i haven't much spare cash. I plan to move in with my Aunt so i can start saving again.

I'm still reading Tony Attwood Complete Guide at the moment. I had to take a considerable amount of sick leave this year just to get over the initial shock of seperation. I'm fortunate to have an understanding boss. I was so low I actually pleaded with them to sack me. They wouldn't, so I said I resign then - he refused it. I've recently returned to work and trying to get back to normal.

The best thing that's happened recently is joining an Asperger social group where I've found support, friendship and something to look forward to every week. I'm even helping out myself. I would recommend joining one if possible - or perhaps starting one - like Mozart and the Whale!
