I was wondering if most people on WP have jobs that involve minimum social interaction or do a lot of people just learn to adapt? I always wanted to be an accountant when I was a kid (and I wondered why my family called me a loser :) ) but I'm now training to be a primary school teacher. I find that I relate really well to kids, probably because they're more honest and haven't grasped the intricacies (sp?) of society's norms. The staffroom however, is always uncomfortable for me, no matter how long I have been at a school.

So, what does everyone else do?

I'm much to young to get a job, but I'd love to be a voice actor. :)

Nuclear operator.

I have to interact with about six people total, but fairly regularly. Thankfully, in order to have my job, you have to be fairly intelligent. As such, generally I can stand their presence.

I surf the internet and answer an occasional question. It's pretty similar to what I do when I'm not at work, but at work I get paid.

I work at an acedemic library. I spend about 5 hours a day auditing the collection. It's very quiet and by and large people leave me alone. The rest of the time I work the service desk. Customer service is really pretty easy once you learn how because it's all by rote. "Hi, what can I do for you? Checkouts? ...and these are all due... Thank-you now."

I know this is way off-topic but OP: is that Chris Skelton from Life on Mars? I love that show - it's back on in a week or two. I saw the new trailer and laughed my head off even though I didn't get the reference!

The truth is complicated but I want to tell the truth. I am retired now, after having “taught” for 25 years and “worked” as an editor in a publishing house and before that as an “employee” in an industry. If I use quotation marks thare are good reasons. I was totally unable to manage the relations implied by the jobs. I was not so bad as an editor, not so horribly bad as a teacher. But I had to pay for enormous psychological costs, and I would have cracked very soon were it not for two reasons. The first is that I had no alternative (or so I thought) to doing these jobs; dependence on the family was unconceivable for me, I couldn’t stand my family, especially my mother. The second was that my name was a well known name, so I was tolerated (and given even some partially deserved respect); however my behavior was inadeqate, erratic and unsatifactory. I quit prematurely, because I was absolutely worn out. I have my retirement allowance now and I live on that, as far as sustenance requires. But...

I work for the Tax Office.

It has stolen my soul, and leads me to have regular meltdowns.

I think it's time for me to leave, don't you?

CNC Timberframing Machine Operator - I work alone in programming/running the machine, but do have to deal with other staff as well. My supervisor is aware of my AS and understands how to communicate with me. My passion for timberframing allows me to communicate well with other staff, as mostly we all 'talk shop'.

BTW, TG stands for Timber Goddess....HA! I love my work!

I am an Interlibrary Loan Page at my local public library. I have been working there for over 4 1/2 years, and I love it. I collect materials for distribution to the various library branches throughout California, from my hometown of Santa Maria to Santa Barbara. I am hoping to get a full time job when the new library is completed in 2008.

I also do some writing and editing.

I am a radio station program director which requires a great deal of interaction with a myriad of different personality types. Without learning to adapt, I never would have made it this far. Like "thinking in pictures", being able to "think in the sounds" of the various elements that create good radio has been of great benefit to me. There are some things about AS, that when you find how they can be applied, can certainly enhance your success. The key is being lucky enough or focused enough to reap such benefits. Sure, personal interaction is always a challenge, more so for many folks, but in my position it cannot be avoided. My Aspergers would be considered mild by some standards, but clinically very classic in its manifestations. I believe the whole course of my condition has lead me right to the point where I am now, in that my perseverances have been focused, like a driving passion, culminating in this successful career.
