We don't really have to wait too long in Australia because a diagnostic assessment is not covered under Medicare so we don't wait but we do have to pay between $900 to $1400 according to my research.
Mummymunt, it sounds like you have a pretty good GP who is not so out of touch with autism like a lot of doctors in Australia.
That may very well be, but all of this couldn't be happening at a worse time! The man I consider to be 'my doctor' moved away recently when the clinic he worked at closed. All the doctors there scattered, and he went somewhere too far away for me to follow
This guy has helped me through years of mental health issues, and both our sons - who are the same age - were diagnosed with Asperger's around the same time.
A couple of months after the old clinic closed I had to go to the new one nearby to get a script renewal, and I've yet to find someone there I'm really comfortable with. I was seeing one guy, and he thought perhaps I was suffering a rare type of migraine. He gave me a couple of samples of Maxalt and said if these work, you have migraine. He also said, during that particular consultation, that I probably have Asperger's and SPD, especially since our son has it. So next time my symptoms flared I took one, and the worst of the symptoms went away, or at least were less horrible, for an hour or two. I took another one later that night with the same result. So I went back to the clinic a couple of days later to report what had happened, but that GP was fully booked for like a week so I saw another guy. He read through my file, listened to what I had to say and said, "No way is that migraine." He really wasn't happy with the previous doctor's evaluation of things, so he ordered a bunch more tests be done and I went back to him last Friday to get the results. On that second visit it seemed like he'd forgotten everything we discussed the week before, didn't seem to be listening to anything I said, and then tried to give me medication for migraines.
After a very long discussion, he prescribed me new anti-depressant. I have to go back in 3 weeks for my first blood test, coz this med is metabolised by the liver. But, now I'm not so sure this guy is as 'with it' as I need him to be. So, this Thursday I have an appointment with ANOTHER GP there, a young woman I saw once at the old clinic who was very nice to me. She's the one I'll be asking for the referral from, and if we have what I consider to be a halfway intelligent discussion on the day, I'll do my best to get in to see her whenever I have need of a doctor.
I ramble a lot, don't I? Sorry! I'm kind of isolated at the moment, though, so it's hard not to let it all just blurt out when someone is willing to talk about it!
