Hi all,

Just signed up and I am a typical Asperger: Difficult childhood, feeling a bit left out, suffered from depression in the past (but not now), no-one noticed from parents, teachers, Doctor, through the woman who tried CBT and even a Counsellor. Not enjoying socialising and smalltalk much, not minding being on my own most of the time, but definitely not all. Coming across a bit 'Doc Martin' (!) and with slightly obsessional hobbies/interests etc.
I was unofficially diagnosed late on in life by my ex just last year and I'm still coming to terms with it, lots of questions like:

Should I be trying to find a Lady Aspie?
Did I get this from my parents?
What should I do about it?
Which are ASP traits and which are just me?

All of which I'm sure i'll find on this forum if and when I look hard enough.
Feeling a bit lonely now, but I'm sure I'll get through. Looking forward to posting more. :)

Hi Mensch,
Welcome to Wrong planet :)

Hopefully in this Forum you will find the answer to your questions.

I choose the actor. I observe NT's. I listen to their socializing. I practice it, so in social situations I can just emulate/mimic what is expected.
It isn't natural for me, but it enables me to "fit in".
It is VERY tiring and draining, but at least we can appear like them even though it is an act. Like being on the stage.
They can't see it is emulation, and so we are accepted.

Well, if it's lonely you're feeling, you've come to the right place. Lots of similar minds like that in here. Pull up a seat. You're among friends now.

Not all aspies have difficult childhoods.

That would be up to you. I would not want to limit myself. Some of us settle down quite happily in loving relationships with NTs. Women tend to be diagnosed less often than men, for reasons under discussion. My own view is that it mostly has to do with how women present with AS, but it's not a universally supported view. Still we do tend to get on better with other Aspies, and assortative mating may be one of several reasons behind the rise in diagnosis of ASDs, which brings me to...

Probably. A number of gene clusters have been tied to Asperger syndrome. If it's not hereditary, at least to a strong degree, a lot of good science is going to have to be explained away.

A source of endless discussion around here. Much will depend on how adaptable you are, and your own environment.

Most of what you list is characteristic of AS. Mental health morbidity runs at around 2 in 3, mainly depression and anxiety, mostly a reaction to discrimination and marginalisation. I would be surprised if you did not have a history of depression, anxiety or both. Bear in mind that up until about 1995 almost nobody had heard of AS, so there are a lot of adults coming through now requesting assessment. This is what I did.

Thanks for all the welcome notes and to Niall for taking the time to explain a few things. :)

I'll continue to search and browse, as I assume what I need to find out has been done over and over again.
I get bored of seeing the same old questions being posted repeatedly on other (unconnected) forums, so don't want to fall into that trap if possible.
