Hi all,
Just signed up and I am a typical Asperger: Difficult childhood, feeling a bit left out, suffered from depression in the past (but not now), no-one noticed from parents, teachers, Doctor, through the woman who tried CBT and even a Counsellor. Not enjoying socialising and smalltalk much, not minding being on my own most of the time, but definitely not all. Coming across a bit 'Doc Martin' (!) and with slightly obsessional hobbies/interests etc.
I was unofficially diagnosed late on in life by my ex just last year and I'm still coming to terms with it, lots of questions like:
Should I be trying to find a Lady Aspie?
That would be up to you. I would not want to limit myself. Some of us settle down quite happily in loving relationships with NTs. Women tend to be diagnosed less often than men, for reasons under discussion. My own view is that it mostly has to do with how women present with AS, but it's not a universally supported view. Still we do tend to get on better with other Aspies, and assortative mating may be one of several reasons behind the rise in diagnosis of ASDs, which brings me to...

Did I get this from my parents?
Probably. A number of gene clusters have been tied to Asperger syndrome. If it's not hereditary, at least to a strong degree, a lot of good science is going to have to be explained away.

What should I do about it?
A source of endless discussion around here. Much will depend on how adaptable you are, and your own environment.

Most of what you list is characteristic of AS. Mental health morbidity runs at around 2 in 3, mainly depression and anxiety, mostly a reaction to discrimination and marginalisation. I would be surprised if you did not have a history of depression, anxiety or both. Bear in mind that up until about 1995 almost nobody had heard of AS, so there are a lot of adults coming through now requesting assessment. This is what I did.
