Hi, I'm new to the forum. I have no official diagnosis of ASD, but my father has always suspected that I am somewhere on the spectrum owing to odd behaviour, social problems and subsequently being bullied for my "weirdness" my whole life. I have been working for Mencap for 6 months, and in that time we have done autism/aspergers training and awareness and several of my colleagues and friends who I have confided my problems in have noted that they think I have aspergers syndrome [as I had no delayed speech/language and have a high IQ]. I took as many of the online tests as I could find and came away with a self-diagnosis of [fairly mild] aspergers, but as yet have been too afraid to get it formalised. I want to go into medicine, and although I know technically no-one can discriminate against me I fear that it will still happen. I view my self-diagnosis as quite a relief, as although to many I seem sociable and outgoing I can only keep up this front for so long before I feel the need to retreat, and my obsessiveness has caused many problems. I have also never had a relationship [I'm nearly 22], as I just don't understand what to do and why it always goes wrong.
I came hear as I thought it would be nice to meet and talk with some like-minded people.
Thanks for reading.

Welcome to WP.

Like you said, a formal diagnosis can sometimes be an impediment. Others find it helpful in getting into assistance and support programs. Either way it's fine. You don't have to seek a formal diagnosis right now, if you ever choose to.

Sometimes, just meeting like-minded people and sharing your experiences can be helpful in itself.
