How Did You Get Your Avatar

NOTE: You don't have to give an answer if it's too personal.

I used to use a picture of one of my cats, but nowadays prefer to use a picture of the real me; just a selfie. The one I use here is somewhat different from other pics of me posted elsewhere, but it is really me.

I took a screenshot of an episode of an X-Men: The Animated Series DVD that I was watching on my laptop.

I got my avatar using my phone camera and about an hour of Photoshop. My sleep lines and dimples are much darker, and my eyebrows are darker normally as well.

I have a few avatars I'd like to choose from, but I'm having trouble getting them under the 16k size limit here.

Best I seem to be able to hit is 22k...

Actually, does anyone know how to get a pic under that size without having it so small its barely recognizable?

Yes.. Open picture with Photoshop, click file, "save for web", and then change the resolution to something under 130 by 160, and that will drastically drop file size. If it doesn't enough, change JPEG image quality to something lower, and that will do it.
