I was recommended this site awhile ago, and although I never knew what I should do if I did join, I think I know now.
My User Name is CaptainNemo, in honor of the 19th-century Indian prince turned aquatic terrorist and the inventor and captain of the only electric submarine in the world from Jules Verne's 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea. I chose the name CaptainNemo, because I am drawn to the notion of being a solitary explorer of the oceans. That, and I also like the fact that the book and Disney film adaptation have the giant squid in it.
I'm an American: born a southerner, and grew up a notherner from Virginia to Connecticut. I share the birthday of Jim Lehrer, Pete Townshend, and Malcolm X.
I was diagnosed with Asperger's Syndrome sometime in the 90s, though I didn't discover that I had it until the year 2001. A friend of my mother's sensed it when she noticed that I was a little off in comparison to my brother and her children. I was tested at a young age, and I got into the special ed program thanks to that. When the diagnosis of Asperger's Syndrome was suggested to my parents, back when the diagnosis was still limited to just displaying conventional Autistic traits and no affection, my parents had trouble believing it. My father was in denial for a long time, because he didn't want me to be defined by a label. Originally, school officials wanted to classify me as disturbed because of my AS label, but my parents fought that attempt and had me be classified as LD (learning disabled), which was never done before (according to the officials). In High School, school officials tried to place me in ACE, but my parents fought that decision as well. They wanted me to have the same education as everybody else, and the classes necessary to get to college. I graduated with Honors, and I have since been attending WestConn. I graduated Magna Cum Laude in English Literature, and I am now currently working on my Master's Thesis.
I have very few loyal friends, though my legend seems to have lingered with many people at the schools I've attended, and have gathered me a very wide fan base of peoples. Even among my brother's friends, I've impressed them. I am a tad bit disorganized mentally and emotionally, and can get ,long winded in conversations, but I manage to still impress those who like individuals like me. I have a long memory (though not as long as it was before), a bit of a photographic memory, and I can do impersonations of some of my favorite comedies.
I am an aficionado of many things, such as film, literature, video games, and some science about giant squids. My literary genres are many: science-fiction, fantasy, historical fiction, mystery, parable, allegory, realism, magic realism, absurdism, parody, surrealism, fairy tales, folk tales, fables, satire, comedy, spy fiction, horror, cosmic horror, sea monster horror, pulp fiction, comic books, erotic fiction, drug fiction, mythology, psychological realism, hyper-realism, romantic fiction, suspense, naturalism, thrillers, etc. I am into many genres of games: such as first-person shooters, third person shooters, real-time strategy games, role playing games, adventure games, platformers, simulations, combat games, stealth games, and games which successfully infuse elements from other genres into their own genre. I am into all kinds of cinematic styles, and am a fan of directors like Stanley Kubrick and Terry Gilliam.
I'd to learn more about other individuals with AS, and to be able to get to know any of you better. I hope I'm welcome to the conclave of Wrong Planet.
