I have been reading through the forums here for a little while now and I been very surprised by how much this site has helped me understand myself. I first started reading more in depth about aspergers and autism after hearing it being mentioned in the news. I was getting very frustrated because even though my knowledge was limited it was sufficient enough to know how badly it was being mischaracterized. Well after looking further into ASD I and finding this site I finally found people I can consistently relate to.

I suspect I am on the spectrum as well as a few of my family members. I am not diagnosed and I don't really think I want to be. I've read many stories on here describing trouble with ignorant doctors, limited treatments, insurance issues, etc... so I don't think it's worth it. I've been very lucky in my life so far as my family as always been supportive and I have been lucky enough to have had a few friends growing up who basically taught me everything I know about socializing. It's still a struggle but I can see the influence they've had in me.

Whether I'm on the spectrum or not I can relate to the posts on this site more then I have ever before so I guess I'm in the right place. I am not the best writer (I tend to over analyze what I write, then I become self-conscious  ) so I may not post a lot but I will try to help others here as much as I can.

Hi Lukeda420! Welcome to Wrong Planet. Sounds like you have made some important self discoveries here. I too am self diagnosed. When I first heard about Asperger's I immediately recognized myself in the traits described. I continued researching it over several years. It took that long, as at the time, info about it was hard to come by. I eventually took one of the tests to confirm what I had already come to believe--that I have Asperger's. I have a relative with some medical training who, on her own, came across Asperger's info, did some additional research, and then told me she believes I have it.

I am in my mid 50s, and have only known that what I have is Asperger's for about 10 years. There isn't much that can be done to treat older aspies, and there is no cure for it. I already get medical assistance for other health issues, and prefer to remain "under the radar" regarding my Asperger's. The government is very intrusive into all aspects of people's lives as it is. The less they know about personal stuff, the better. As long as I am getting medical assistance due to my other health issues, I will keep my Asperger's "off the table."

I am glad that you are finding WP and other sites helpful in your research. I too, hung out here for a couple of years before registering with the site, but have been a registered member for several years now. I am a non social person, but this site is within my comfort zone. I can post, or not post, when and as often as I choose. And I have access to all of the forums here. Mostly I just use the general and autism forums, but a couple of times I used the computer forum to get some computer advice. Some of the other forums sound interesting to me, also, but I don't have as much time as I'd like, to explore the site more.

Enjoy the site! I do!

I'm recently new as well. Just registered. I relate to what you saying...

I agree with you when you say you don't want to get diagnosed. There is the possibility of good coming out of this, but the chances are very unexpected. I have always though that the human mind and it's mysteries can be a very frustrating path once in the hands of people who just take his job as job. It needs a true connection between 'wounded and healer' in order to get good results and nowadays with economy and s**t... It just doesn't happen easily.

Glad you got true friends for a help, I have made some good friends in the past 5 years which made a huge plus for both of us. So much beautiful things humans can do to each other when the pieces are right :)
