Hi! I'm just starting out what I can do with my lot in life after realising I might be on the spectrum. Now in late middle-age I totally missed out on this at school.

Tentative greetings, because I have no experience of internet chat rooms, forums or blogs, so I might quickly back off into my shell again. It has taken me some courage to get this far.

Planning on getting an assessment by the end of the year, and kind of hoping the diagnosis will be clear cut. It would explain so much if so. Hoping it is rather like the time I was told I needed specs to see the blackboard - awareness of a previously unrecognised difficulty resolved merely by the adjustment of wearing glasses, albeit with a few problems when it's raining. Could it be that simple? Just need to get used to being taunted as "four-eyes" all over again.

Welcome! By living in the United Kingdom, you have the advantage of getting a diagnosis for adult autism-spectrum disorder(s) if you want one. It is a little more complicated in the United States. And, we have reasons to avoid official diagnoses.

No need for much courage here, unless you don't like the taunting and personal attacks that seem to pervade unmoderated within some topics (despite being prohibited by forum rules). Many Wrong Planet members are a lot of fun. Enjoy!

My doc declined to refer me himself, so I'll need to fund it myself. He told me it was not good value for money as I have a well paid job and a stable family and there were no pills that would do any good. However, fed up with never moving on in my chosen career despite lots of effort, I feel the need to know why, what holds me back, but no one at work will tell me and I just don't get the annual appraisal system or understand how others seem to progress despite being technically less able than me.

Does Aspergers create a glass ceiling?

Oooh, good question! And, if it does create a glass ceiling, is it the result of the Aspie or the supervisors/coworkers?
Personally, I blame the supervisor(s). Every job that was terminated or from which I quit, was the result of hostile supervisors. I could work around the clock and loved my coworkers, but the hostility from supervisors who disagreed with my work methods, not the end results, pushed me out of several good jobs.
