Hi there

I'm new to the board and wanted to introduce myself and say hey.

I'm a self diagnosed aspie, in the process of working out whether I should push for a professional diagnosis as a 32 year old female, and having been misdiagnosed several times with mental health illnesses as the doctors never listen to me or my symptoms I'm wondering if it's worth it.

Does anyone have any experience in the UK of pursuing a diagnosis after being labeled as something else?

Welcome to Wrong Planet!

Unless there is a tangible benefit to getting a diagnosis for adult Asperger's Syndrome, getting one can be costly, lengthy and sometimes detrimental to other parts of your life legally and professionally. But, it is, of course, your choice. Having a diagnosis helps some people despite the downside. For me, at least, I have learned to be satisfied with my University of Cambridge Autism Research Centre screening-test scores and my lifelong characteristics. They are the only "diagnosis" I need. :D

Either way, good luck!

Hi AspieUtah,

Thanks for your reply I can't seem to get the link in your post to open up but will try again later and take the test as my phone won't open a lot of web pages.

I think that for me the main reason for wanting to pursue a diagnosis is that I've been diagnosed with borderline personality disorder after my doctor told me to go away and google the symptoms! After telling her that the rages and melt downs fit but only when I was fraustrated or had sensory overload and that I don't really know who I am that apparently was enough to diagnose it. Now because of that diagnosis on my records every time I have any problem they won't even hear me out and dismiss me because they think I'm attention seeking which would fit perfectly with bpd but honestly the last thing I have every wanted from anyone was any extra attention.

I just tried the Cambridge link and it worked for me. Try http://archive.wired.com/wired/archive/9.12/aqtest.html for the AQ test. The Cambridge site includes text-document versions of its tests which require them to be manually scored. The Wired version is self-scoring. If you score above 26 (32 was the old threshold), you might then want to download, complete and score the factor tests including EQ (empathy), FQ (friendship) and SQ (systemizing).
