Hello everyone,

I'm new here.

I don't have an official diagnosis but I have taken multiple online tests, the results of which indicate that I am on the autism spectrum, something I have long suspected.

I have come across this forum multiple times as the result of Google searches. I have found the information I have read on here very helpful so far and it is comforting to see that there are other people struggling with the same issues as I am.

Thanks for making this online community, and I look forward to getting to know some of you.

Mme. de Guermantes.

Hello and welcome to WP! It's nice to see a Swede.
It looks as if you are heading in the right direction. Have you talked to a psychologist yet about your suspicions?
Do you plan on getting an official diagnose? I know the waiting time to get into Habilitering after you get your referral from a psychologist can take up to a year. So if you have interest in getting a diagnose you should start right away.

I got my diagnose in Sweden so if you have any questions feel free to ask.

Thanks for your reply!

I haven't talked to a psychologist about this and I don't really know if I want to or need to. I haven't really thought about getting a dignosis and I'm not sure if I want or need one.

This is all really new to me and I wasn't planning on really doing anything except joining this forum and reading some books and articles on the subject, at least for the time being.

Could you tell me what would be the advantages or disadvantages of getting a diagnosis from a psychologist?
What is involved in the habilitering process?

I looked at your Instagram page, your work is so beautiful! I am interested in photography myself.
What part of sweden are you in?

Hi yes of course it is all up to you. What you are comfortable with is what will be best for your situation.
If you go through habilitering it is normally a four part process, four meetings about 3 hours long. If you get a diagnose it is easier to get help if you ever need it from places like Försäkringskassan. If you have trouble finding a job then it can help you find something more fitting to you through Arbetsförmedlingen. These organizations try harder to work with you if you have autism, if you are still underage then they can help your parents financially. If you are in school they can help you get tutors that can help you with some challenges that may come your way.

Thank you for your kind words about my art. It is my special interest ;) It something I enjoy doing immensely.
I live in Dalarna, where are you from?

Hi,

I'm not underage, I'm turning 32 in a few days.
I'm from California but I live in northern Stockholm.

I moved to Sweden about 5 years ago. My fiancé had lived here for many years and wanted to move back. I've always wanted to live outside the US so I was super excited to move here.

I have never been to Dalarna or anywhere else in Sweden. Just stockholm and some places just north and south of here. I've been out to the archipelago though.

If you have an autism diagnosis, are there any clear disadvantages? Are there jobs you are not allowed to do for some reason? Are there situations where you can be legally discriminated against?
Would something like that be keep private?
Sorry if these questions seem weird but like I said this all new to me and I am not familiar with how things work here in Sweden either.

I have been taking classes at komvux for a while and I am planning to apply to university next year. I have never had a paid job in Sweden, I've only done volunteer work, so I don't know anything about jobs or working in Sweden.

Thank you so much for taking the time to explain this stuff to me.

I am also an American living in Sweden, I am from Michigan originally but my husband is Swedish, I moved here to be with him. I have lived here 10 years now.

I understand your worries, I know that Sweden is pretty supportive and liberal when it comes to things like autism. They are far better than America in these cases. I know jobs will not discriminate, you have far more rights in the work place here but I am not quite sure what you mean by legally. I believe this sort of thing is kept private, I will ask more about your questions next time I go to habilitering.

Is your husband Swedish? Do you plan on getting citizenship here?

I go to Stockholm a few times a year for art shows and to visit some friends. I like those trips, I always have a great time. :)

You mean that you display your own works at art shows?
I love art and I am always interested in going to art shows and galleries. If you are displaying your works in stockholm some time let me know when and where.

I am already a citizen here. I got citizenship last year and had the ceremony this summer. I really like Sweden and we plan to stay here for the foreseeable future.

My fiancé is originally from Iran, but moved here in his early twenties. He lived here for over 10 years before moving to CA, where we met.

What a coincidence that you replied to this thread and you are also an American living in Sweden! I rarely meet other Americans here.

Do you like Sweden? Do you plan to stay here? Have you lived anywhere else in Sweden or just Dalarna? Have you fully adapted to life here? Do you feel at home here or like an outsider?

Swedish culture on the whole really suits me much better than american because I am introverted, quiet and private. It's nice to not be expected to make chit chat with the cashier every time I go to the market.
