I am 40 and was diagnosed with aspergers about 6 months ago and am very new to this. Since the diagnosis I am receiving therapy geared toward it. It is relieving to finally have gotten a correct diagnosis but I am kind of in a spot where I don't know where to go from here. It has so impacted my personal and professional life. Now that I know it explains a lot of things. Anyone been in my spot?

Hey bearded1 welcome. :sunny:

I'm in a similar spot myself. I was diagnosed with aspergers just last September at age 49. I've been wondering where to go from my diagnoses ever since lol. :)

Hi. Totally new here. Diagnosed autistic 3 months ago age 42. Wasn't a surprise, I had previous labels of dyslexia, clumsy child syndrome (called dyspraxia nowadays), ADD, brain damage. The new label of Autism just sort of pulls it all together. My parents thought I was autistic as a child but 40 odd years ago were told that girls couldn't be autistic. I'm kind of grateful for that, as I think I might have met more discrimination if I had a bigger label. I think my traits have had a profound impact on my personal life, but a much more mixed impact on my career. Sometimes a huge hindrance, sometimes an active help.

I have no idea where to go from here. I thought getting the diagnosis might help me see something more clearly, but actually it hasn't and I'm just wondering what I spent all that money for.

Yeah over the years it has taken a toll on my career as well I get freaked out about something and I withdraw and bolt. There will be get together and I will just stay in my office and not talk to anyone. However being hyper focused is a benefit in my job.

I have been diagnosed as bipolar before but didn't seem right. It was quite liberating to actually get a diagnosis that fit me. That way I can identify. I just look back over 40 years and think why not sooner. Is that the same with you all?

I did read a book my therapist recommended by David finch called journal of best practices. It was very helpful in me determining what my therapist was saying was true.

To be honest I am really struggling right now!

Yes, it is odd that it took so long to get diagnosed. Aspergers has been an official diagnoses since '92 in the US and UK, if I remember correctly. I've been seeing counselors for over 15 years now. It makes me wonder how no one picked up on it sooner.

I think a lot of it was the people around me were not that familiar with the signs and that I just really hid it well. I have been seeing my current therapist for about 3 years now and it wasn't until really recently my walls of hiding it really came down. It was a good thing but really was a big hit to me that everyone discovered really what was going on with me.
