Finger picking goodness
Hi, username may be construed as being from that old sega game, but nope: lovely lint you find between your toes :p
After many many years of not knowing why I was the way I was and really having to learn to sink or swim when it came to interacting and concentration... It was suggested by my therapist that I was exhibiting aspects of aspergers which had taken her about 30 sessions to detect (said that the front and mask I put on was very developed) it got the ball rolling with the lovely NHS (UK healthcare)... Waited a year to see a consultant and after a 30 min chat he said 'yes' it was possible but I'd have to wait a further year for a full assessment... I had a break down and hospitalised... Was just worn/burnt out.
My mum panicked and got me in for a private assessment instead and I was diagnosed 2 days ago (will be getting some lengthy report on results in about 2 weeks).
Has I guess given me a lot of closure and relief that there has been something tangible to the way I am... Now just got to work on 'what next?'
Hi, ToeJam, welcome to WP!
Sorry, you've suffered so much. Unfortunately things can take a real toll on us and burn us out. It can take time to bounce back...
Finding out about your Asperger's can also be a lot to deal with. It's not uncommon to re-examine one's life and see things differently and it can feel like everything is turned up side down back and forth. At least it was very powerful for me.

Thanks to you and Alex for the greetings Skilpadde.
Yeah, it's a lot to take in at the moment. Has put a whole different spin on past experiences/regrets and learning curves.
Not sure if I said this in the OP but while my mind is a bit frazzled (still in hospital as I type this)... It's like an overly tight valve has at last been loosened and it's given me a kind of 'closure'
Not sure if it was the same for you but as a kid aspergers was barely recognised when I was a kid (I'm 38) so I completely slipped through the net. Woman who assessed me pretty much ended the assessment with 'I can't understand how you've been able to remain undiagnosed to this point without going completely nuts'.
I didn't really reply but in essence 1. I didn't know & 2. I had to get on with it and just try to seem as normal as possible.

I hope the following aren't stupid questions... And though it might be better pming a mod/admin, I always get nervous doing that when new to a forum as I don't know whose who (as in not familiar with approachability... Hope that doesn't seem rude).
Stuck on phone at the moment with very slow connection and still very knew to the concept of having aspergers... Seeing lots of areas on the board for posting about autism... But being old and not fully familiar with the dsm updates, not sure if those are just for people with autism (got a very 'basic' understanding of the spectrum).
So a bit lost at the moment and with a slow net connection (out in the middle of nowhere while in hospital) kinda twiddling my thumbs wondering where to go

No worries, ToeJam, I totally understand about feeling nervous on a new site.
DSM-V removed Aspergers and only talks about autism level 1, 2 and 3. 1 means Asperger's, HFA and PDD-NOS, level 2 would be approximately what we are more familiar with as moderate classic autism, and level 3 would be the severe classic autism (LFA, low-functioning autism).
The opinions on the changes from DSM-IV are divided, and some of us aspies will use the terms aspie and Asperger’s, while others use autistic and autism. You will see both new and old DSM terms used here.
And since you’re European (like me), the ICD-10 (the current version of WHO’s International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems (ICD)) should be valid for you, meaning Aspergers is still a diagnosis.
Anyway, the section called General Autism Discussion is for all of us, so you can safely post there. And when you see threads talking about autism, you are qualified to respond.
I hope that answers your questions. If you're uncertain about anything, feel free to ask.
Hope to see you around soon

Wow, the NHS really is a lottery, 2 years to get an assessment?! I'm down SW UK and was told I was going to have to wait 6 months but actually only had to wait 2, I have my assessment in a couple of weeks. That's mad that you had to wait that long and I hope your mum isn't too out of pocket.
