Hi there, been lurking for a while...
Hi there,
first of all, just to say, I'm so happy to have found this website and the forum.
I've been lurking for ages now, just because I didn't quite know, how to start, but anyway, who am I and why am I here?
I know I'll now be writing and deleting and writing and deleting and writing and .....
I live in the UK at the moment and am a mum to a fantastic 14 year old boy. Due to many reasons I had started reading about Asperger's years ago (friends had suggested my son might be on the spectrum), every time I went back to it, I thought, well a lot of it sound like me and then other things just don't, but I wonder...
Then I came across ADD and how it's presented in a different way in women, I had a light bulb moment, this did fit rather well, one of the reasons being my rather rubbish executive functioning skills, filling in forms is definitely a form of severe torture and I'm as scatter brained as any mad professor (without the PhD or job)
It wasn't until I came across a webpage on AS, which stated that girls and women presented differently from boys/men and so the research re-started and yes, I rather like doing research.
Anyway, I highly suspect I am somewhere on the spectrum, although, I do the communication and face reading bit far too well, so that's when the doubts kick in, again.
I would really like to go for a diagnosis, but don't yet have the courage to go to my gp for fear of not being taken seriously, "but you're doing so well and you can do eye contact and blah blah blah..."
Apparently, I was a rather difficult child, didn't talk much, didn't like being hugged or cuddled, my family just couldn't understand me and when I was about 10, a psychologist diagnosed me with severe depression and difficulties in connecting with other people.
I personally feel I'm definitely more AS than NT. In any case I'd love to get to know more Aspies and other brilliantly neurodiverse people, seem to be getting on with them much better than typical NTs. Although, I do have some fab NT friends.
Not sure if it makes any sense, but I almost feel like a fraud being here, but I'd love to stay here, as I love to read about all the stuff you post and talk about. I would love to be able to take part in discussions and ask questions and learn more.
Obviously, I'm not expecting any of you to "diagnose" me, just putting all this out to try and explain, why I'm here.
What do I like doing?
I love being creative (working as a textile artist and up-cyclist, though got an MA in Ancient History), I love horse riding (got my own ), reading, reading and reading, dancing, especially the Argentine tango, if only you didn't have to socialise while learning it, why can't I just go, learn to dance and then go home?, it's all too complicated, I do karate - much better scenario, I go, we do the lesson and I go home, also there's a great age range, kids and adults, just adults can be very scary, I play the piano, badly, but I love it (self taught), I love classical music (especially Bach, Satie, Haendel), I love doing mentally challenging stuff, need lots of intellectual input, hate small talk, love feeding my little family of crows (they are not really mine, but I started befriending them a while ago), walking my dog, just being in nature, going to the theatre, opera, I like acting (not good at it, but who cares), I love everything vintage, well, especially the 20's and 30's, I drive a Morris Minor (wish I could look after it better, too), I really enjoy archery, but don't really get the chance to do it much, I love going to art galleries and exhibitions and I very happily do all those things on my own.
Ok, maybe this is enough for a start?

Hey. I've been lurking for about as long as you and just posted something today. I am a 49 year old mother of 2 boys - 16 and 19. Decided to reply to your post since I too like being creative, reading, reading, reading, playing the piano (I'm actually quite good so I'm told but I'm also told I never give myself enough credit), and classical music. I am in the process of being diagnosed and have gone for round 1 of neuropsychological testing. Awaiting round 2 later this month and the final results on July 31 which is scaring me to death.
Hi, thank you so much for your lovely comments, not had the time to check, as I'm also homeschooling my son (14) or did I mention this before? Really looking forward to the summer holidays, starting in a week, as I am pretty exhausted.
I am debating whether to try and get a diagnosis privately or go the NHS (National health service here in the UK), obviously going private is very expensive. However, the consultant I'd choose has AS herself and I'd trust her more to get to the bottom of things, rather than professionals, who might not really be clued up on spotting autism in females.
I fear in many ways, I just function too well. Could well be, I'm "only" borderline. However, the more research I do, the more I read, the more I think, yep sounds like me. In any case, I feel I just want to know, no, I need to know.
