Hey all,

I thought it good to introduce myself. My name is Mark and I currently live just outside of Southampton on England's south coast.

I've been 'odd' for a very long time but was diagnosed 3 years ago as being on the spectrum with a distinct lack of empathy and a strong tendency for intense focus on those few things that grab my attention. I am one of the lucky ones with a decent level of intelligence and logic processing, which helps when I can focus on work.

As happens, personal relationships are challenging but I am lucky enough to have an understanding wife and a 6 year old who school say isn't 'like daddy' although she's every little bit like me.

I have only 2 interests, or as the wife calls them, obsessions  I watch and coach rugby and am the one to go for for ideas that are away from the 'usual solutions', I also enjoy installing hifi into my car and then having decent music I can listen to. This fits the techy obsessive part of me as there's a lot of thoery and planning required to get the best results and I'm good at applying knowledge logically to process my way to a solution.

My current challenge is to find a way where I can switch off my hobby obsessions and allow myself to focus on work. It causes issues when I'm thinking more about how to improve a team's performance or how to get better performance out of the hifi.

So that's me, briefly.

Hi there, Mark

I sympathise with issue of not being able to leave your obsessions behind when you're at work. I lost my last job largely because of this - ironically, just a few months before being diagnosed and having my executive functioning deficits identified.

I was only diagnosed a few weeks ago (at 45 y.o), so unfortunately, I don't think I have any advice to offer, but this forum seems about the best place anywhere to get those kind of insights! I'll be looking keenly to see how others will answer your question!

I was diagnosed at 43 so we're not far off.

I've been temping for 14 years so as to avoid boredom, however I'm sure I can do better with a little control. I'm off to see the doctor this week so will see if the medical profession here has a clue.
