howdy.
i'm 29, but i look like i'm 16 -- i get along better with people who are younger then me... so it's not a surprise that i'm back in university with kids who are 20 and i fit right in.
some background info...
i'm not diagnosed - unless a self-diagnosis counts! i don't have close friends - ever. i hate to be touched... which is strange because i let someone close enough to me in order to have 2 kids. (one of which i strongly suspect has AS.)
i have crazy sensitivities to smell, sound and light/darkness.
i freak out when i hear or smell balloons, or those holographic surfaces they make for cards etc. that when you run your fingernail over it it makes this awful noise.
i'm the clumsiest person you'll ever meet.
i take things very literally. (though i am getting better.)
i'm working hard at making eye contact with people, but it is so uncomfortable - i just avoid people most of the time. (THIS IS WHY I LOVE MIRRORED SUNGLASSES!!)
i am so emotionally messed up, that i often call my therapist and ask her if it's normal when i'm feeling a certain way. i think that is sad.
i'm obsessed with bach... i have been playing piano since i was 3. i speak several languages... english is my primary language. i was (still am a bit) hyperlexic as a kid. i am an artist: photographer, animator, filmmaker... i'm studying film at school. i get all the technical stuff - it's the theory that i have a hard time with.
anything else you want to know?
i'm really nervous about being here, actually.
my therapist suggested it.
Don't be. We're an accepting bunch. Welcome to WP!

haha, at first I thought that was one of your languages. What other languages do you speak? I love language and my goal is to learn as many as I can. I've had a smattering of spanish and german, both of which I basically pick up. But my main focus (other than english of course) is Arabic.

do you ever use a "big" word and then later think "did i use that in the right context?" -- if you do, you're still hyperlexic.
that and having an enormous appetite for reading, but not for speaking - i believe.
i also have hypergraphia - a compulsion to write. i always have notebooks (i'm obsessed with pens and notebooks) with me so that i can write at will.

Mandarin I think would be awesome as well. I guess I'm interested in the really different languages from English. How difficult is Mandarin? Arabic is a lot of fun and the alphabet is actually surprisingly easy to learn (its an actual alphabet system, not characters). For some reason Russian looks a bit scary to me. Persian is next on my list.

mandarin... well... it's hard to explain. it's difficult because there is not really emphatic syllables. the syllables are short and timed. it's very difficult to translate from english into mandarin and vice versa because you have to understand the way phrases are composed.
does that make sense?
it's a language that you need to immerse yourself in.

Hello! I hate balloons and love bach too! I do the backwards-ness too, but only handwritten, and my words are still in order. I change my mind to often to plan ahead like that^.^
So as far as Bach is concerned...are you pro/anti rubato? (I'm a violist, and I love taking time with phrasing...but a lot of my piano friends refuse...)
