Hello everyone,

I figured I'd introduce myself so here I go:

I'm a college student going into a medical laboratory specialty. Science is a passion of mine and I'm a huge animal lover. Because of my autism being describe as high functioning by doctors and my family, I am often mistaken for being neurotypical. This creates an environment where my experiences and needs are usually invalidated and people expect me to meet their expectations of someone who is neurotypical. When I tell people that I'm autistic and act the way I do, they don't believe me or tell me I grew out of being autistic.

As such, I don't have much of a voice in my affairs and I'm left in a position where my education and career are on the line. That's why I'm here. To get guidance when possible and to finally seek out others in my situation who know what it's like to be autistic and who won't judge my idiosyncrasies.

Much love!

Snow

Welcome to the forum Snow :)

You're in the right place and I'm sure a lot of us can identify with your experiences as 'passing' for NT.

What are your favourite animals? :)

Thanks everybody! I've only spent a bit browsing the forums, but I've already learned so much more than I have in years. I read about other's experiences and it's like an echo of myself. All these years I thought I was just weird and alone in my tendencies. It feels really nice to know I'm not alone.

I like wolves a lot. I feel that I have a lot in common with them.

What are you learning from these forums ? I suppose you mean in terms of the Aspie-Experiences. Yes, I suppose a lot of us can relate to several similar experiences, particularly those of us who are non-conformists... ;o

Hi,

Having high-functioning autism myself, I can relate to others not understanding or believing your diagnosis. They have their own idea of what autism is, and tend not to think of it as a spectrum.

What do you mean, though, when you say that your education and career are 'on the line'? Are you having trouble in school or work? Or are you around a lot of judgmental people? Or are your symptoms holding you back a little? I can relate to that. I couldn't make relationships with people I was at school with; I just never knew what to say or how to act. So I never made friends. In many of my classes I was a good student, so the teachers respected me, but that's about it.

All I can say is do your best. I wish I could be of more help.
