Welcome Dave.
You're a bit of a disappointment. For a moment I thought you read Iain M Banks, then I saw he was M-less.
Not sure if you're being funny or not, but it's the same guy! I like his "M" stuff (the space-opera ones..Excession is my favourite) and I also like his "M-less" ones, especially Whit and The Wasp Factory. The guy's just a genius!
Yes. The smiley was intentional. And you're quite correct in checking for unintentional sarcasm/wit/irony/ all that jazz. I know they're the same guy, with M standing for SF. An interesting way of doing things. I've not seen if he gives a reason why he started doing that.
I've read The Wasp Factory, but it didn't leave much of an impression. Watched the TV series they made of Crow Road, which I enjoyed, but mainly for one or two of the "good bits" (E.g. the pacemaker in the crematorium).
I'm an almost exclusive SF reader. I.M.B is one of my favourite authors - it's just a pity he doesn't write many books.
A more prolific author that I regard highly is Piers Anthony. One of the few writers I know who, if you read a book and didn't know who the author was, you wouldn't be able to tell it was him. Does that make sense? (I've said a similar thing about Dustin Hoffman, as an actor. Five minutes into watching a film with him in it, you've utterly forgotten who the actor is.)
Anyway, Piers writes various series (the largest being the Xanth fantasy stuff - there's now over thirty of them on their own). Within a series, he maintains quite a strict style, but pick up another series, or an isolated book, and the style is unrecognisable (but excellent, again). One of the weirdest might be "Memoires of a Space Tyrant". Lame title? Yes. First chapter of first book - instant captivation of the mind (and/or horror).
