Hi! My son aged 16 has just been diagnosed with Aspergers by one doctor and "AS like symptoms" by another. Yet another doctor said he was just stressed! :? The doctors can't seem to agree. Whatever the name of the diagnosis,he has some serious problems with severe depression and social problems. I am finding it really hard to deal with and would love to chat to some other parents in a similar position.

Hi - misdiagnosis and problems with diagnosis are the rule, not the exception with Aspergers! My son is 17, and although I figured out he had AS years ago, we just got the official diagnosis last year. My advice is to read everything you can about AS (there are lots of books out there). It will help you understand your son and see which traits he has and which he doesn't. Aspies are all different, of course, but you'll see some similarities.
If you're convinced he has AS and want a diagnosis, see a good psychologist who has experience with AS, and have a full battery of neuro-psychological tests done. It will give you and your son a lot of insight into what's going on and how his brain works!

Right, Doctors, fee splitting, referrals, kickbacks, and little education. They did not even get elected.

Prepare your own defense, in writing, they hate evidence they are wrong.

AS is sloppy work, not a single pair here.

If you meet three of twelve criteria, you may have AS or Hay Feaver.

Next you will find people who want to treat all symptoms, including the ones he does not have.

It said so in the book. They have car payments to make.

AS is an education, no one has it all. Pick your problems carefully.

AS does not change the fact that sixteen years old boys have natural depression and social problems.

The next few years will bring massive changes, do not get stuck treating teenits.

Pick your fights with care. The best thing he can have is a supportive parent.
