I have a 10 y.o. son who I am finding fits alot of the characteristics of Asperger's. So I am in the information gathering mode and trying to see where we fit into all of this. We are coming up on summer break and would love to have any suggestions you have regarding parenting skills. I would say his biggest area of struggle is with doing things out of his comfort zone - like playing something "different" with other kids - without getting frustrated and angry and then going off on his own. He is very comfortable with video games - but I would like to work with him on building his social/creative skills so he doesn't spend his summer just wanting to watch tv or play on the computer/video games.

Any suggestions would be great!

Anyway, as there is, very often, a genetic component at aspie people, you could stay with us at least for a while :D

Welcome!

Welcome! The parent forum is an excellent place to go to find hints and techniques that other parents use. I have 4 kids myself. Two of them have Asperger's (diagnosed). They are 16 (S) and 13 (T2) and both are boys. I know exactly what you are going through. I am lucky because I have 3 teen sons who are extremely close so the NT 14 year old includes his brothers in his activities and when they are all home they socialize with each other. I also have rules about things like going outside for a certain amount of time each day. In the case of T2, he was very withdrawn so I bought a dog (border collie) for the family and gradually gave T2 more and more responsibility. Now the dog is his best friend and he is never really alone. He also has to think about someone other than himself and it has made him more responsible.

Other parents have many, many more ideas. I tend to be more unconventional than most of them so they may have advice that makes more sense.

LAN parties. Two player games. DanceDance Revolution. To get one of my sons to learn how to write proper business letters, I had him write to Nintendo Power once a month until they published one of his letters. Have your church or volunteer club have video game nights for those on the spectrum.
