Hello forum folk...
I've been reading about Asperger for a few days now and even though I'm in my forties I do recognise myself in some if not most of the traits, but since I've only been diagnosed with depression from doctor I was concerned that it could be something more going on.
I like a lot of alone time and obsessions myself I have a regular job as a carer in a nursing home for older people and a lot of them suffer with mental illness so it's been good to read about it just to see if I can be more empathic in dealing with challenging behaviour as well as understanding some of the traits in myself.
I also have 2 children from a previous relationship and wondering if I've passed on some of the traits to one of them( my daughter)
It's hard to be sure so I don't like diagnosing as I'm not qualified but if I go to the doctors do I just ask for a test?
Thanks

Hello. :) Welcome. Yes, go to your GP and ask for a referral. Take a short bullet point list with you of the all the reasons you think you're autistic. Then probably you'll have to wait a few months to see someone, likely the local mental health team.

Hi, Moondancer, I also am new to this site.

I've had an account for a long time but have hardly ever used it.

What I did was to attend an open support group for those diagnosed with Aspergers and those who weren't.

I attended monthly meetings for about a year and a half, before setting up an evaluation appointment with the psychologist affiliated with the support group and nonprofit. I could have gotten a referral right away to be set up for an evaluation.

Good luck.
