Hi everyone. I am the mother of a 20 yr old son who has autism. I am looking for a discussion on how to help him feel better about himself.

Our struggle at the moment is around being accepted by general society. He believes that a vast part of society either overtly or secretly rejects those with a mental disorder or disability. He supports his argument by siting Television programs, social media etc that mock those they portray or deem as "dumb" "idiots" etc. He sees but cannot understand double standards or why the hypocrisy. (Society pays lip service to being inclusive...but then produces, perpetuates and tolerates entertainment that is judgmental) He attempts to fit into mainstream and is hurt by the rejection he feels because of the struggles he has due to autism.

I would really appreciate anyone helping direct me to the type of discussions that cover those issues. Thank You.

Why not encourage you son to sign up himself and poke around? It's a big site, and he will probably find a lot of other people like himself.

(Just advise him to stay away from the politics section. That's where all our local crazy people are.

Thanks Darmok...I will be encouraging him to join...I think he would benefit tremendously from talking with others who can really understand.
