So, this is my first post on any board on the web.

I was diagnosed a little less than a year ago. I'm a high-functioning Asperger's-diagnosed person who struggles with those ______ social subtleties. My girlfriend has been a lot of help to me, though, and I am very grateful for her willingness to help me navigate family dinners and work situations. Still, I want to learn more about Asperger's. I'd rather see it as a gift or a different point of view than as a crutch.

I hope to learn a lot on this forum.

Warmly,

James

Gwenevyn,

Thanks! So...after lurking for a week or two (before finally breaking down and registering), I noticed that a wealth of topics have been addressed. One question I have (which may well have already been covered, but repetition isn't all that bad) is how many people's confidences have been repeatedly shattered and rebuilt with AS and Autism? We are persistent folks, yes, but...it starts to drain you over the years...

I'll look over the forums as well, of course. Is there a search feature on this website?

James

James,

I've seen the subject covered obliquely in several threads, especially in the relationships forum, although I haven't yet seen a thread entirely dedicated to that topic. I am fairly new myself, though, so that doesn't mean there hasn't been one.

There sure is a search feature! When you're at the main board (where you end up directly after clicking "Discussions" on the WP site menu), there is a search link located directly below the ad banner in the main frame, right next to the link for your private message box.

Hi James,

Nice to meet you. I certainly agree with your idea of seeing AS as a 'gift' or 'difference'. And I don't really understand the smalltalk thing either.

To quote one of Charlie Brooker's friends (he writes for the Guardian Newspaper Guide supplement in the UK) "Cows moo, humans do smalltalk"

That made me smile.

Welcome to WP!

:)

welcome to WP
there was an very funny off-shoot in a thread a short time ago on what confidence is, if I can find the link I'll post it for you
we don't do small talk - unless you count all the cat threads, then there is a split as to the importance of cats.... :?

It's a gift! It's a gift! I am the proud mother of 3 boys - 2 diagnosed with this gift. Now that they are getting the help they need they amaze me every day.

They are so intelligent and extremely funny!

*standing applause*

From a female's perspective, I can't stand chatting about bloody shopping. (that's my slight personal rant)

Regards
Smelena
