I've been on the forum a while, but never really posted. I decided to start posting because my husband started sharing my dx with his friends, so that they would understand me a bit better. With that said, i understand that i must be a bit different, so i asked his friends what i do that they consider odd. They had so many examples, most of which i was unaware! What are some Aspie quirks that you didn't realize was considered odd???? I'm really hoping to get a list, so that i can be mindful of my quirks, so that people don't get annoyed with me so much.

thanks

some of the quirks they pointed out to me are the following:

 I talk rigidly.(robotic- I thought i was normal- ha)

 i'm quiet(i thought i was too talkative)

 my dislike for the texture of wooden utensils is abnormal

 I don't have any one certain hobby- I have hundreds of unfinished projects that i rotate through every few days. Nothing gets finished and i have a bunch of junk.
(i honestly didn't realize that i had so many til my husband pointed that out to me!!)

 I like to tell people interesting facts about things- apparently It makes me seem like i am a know-it-all.
I tell people the interesting facts because i feel it is a way to talk to other people, because i've been told i am withdrawn and i don't strike up needless conversation. I find these facts fun to know, but it isn't fun for other people to know.

 Telling people a bunch of unsolicited information about foreign language is "not normal"

there are tons more examples, and I'll write them here when i remember them

People on this site want to talk about unnecessary anxiety, not quirks. They think people with quirks have it made.

I wouldn't worry about your quirks OP , it's who you are. You might want to make certain adjustments if they are causing you issues but it sounds like people are accepting of you so it's all good.

I think it is quite common for an Aspie to not be self aware of their quirks so you are not alone.

I won't eat out / drink out / go to the cinema alone , I tried it but it just feels too uncomfortable due to anxiety.

If I leave to go somewhere, I will check and make sure my front door is locked a second time.

Why's that? Just the social element?

I think it's a self esteem issue with me , If I am on my own I feel I have less chance of blending and feel I stick out more.

It's a shame you feel that way, because the consolations of solitude are enormous; it really brings great comfort to me, and presumably many others too. Perhaps you should work on this.

I've always thought it was strange when you see someone in pub drinking alone as I always saw drinking as a social thing ( although I needed lots of alcohol to be social in a pub  ). I agree solitude can be beneficial but I wouldn't feel any solitude if anyone else was in the room - I'm weird/wired like that :)

Well, it doesn't need to be a pub; any drinking or eating establishment would be sufficient, I imagine - a coffee shop or restaurant for instance.

1) I mumble when I talk, very softly spoken

2) I don't finish my sentences and expect the other person understands what I'm talking about

3) I quince at something if I don't like it and also do this when someone asks of my opinion about someone else/something I don't particularly like

4) I can quickly work around computers - my colleagues call me the 'IT' whiz as a joke - I just think they're common sense

5) Bring my own spoon/fork/butter knife to work if I've got lunch/dinner that requires me to eat with them - HATE the idea of using the ones for staff

6) Cleaning clean plates before using them to serve food - especially if I'm not at mine

7) Mumble tunes/songs/noise to myself, especially if I'm with group of friends who know each other so well, to keep myself occupied. Didn't think this was odd until my friend and her friend kept pointing it out.

8) I start rocking when I'm feeling uncomfortable/getting passionate about a topic and trying to express myself with words
(a lot of hand movements and pauses and facial expressions of frustration)

9) I don't remember my surroundings, especially new places, easily get lost and confused

10) Completely shutdown when I'm in an emotionally taxing situation, won't talk, don't keep eye contact, go inwards and start thinking of something else, another situation

How do you learn a quirk?
