Hello People of Wrong Planet,

I'm an adult female living (more or less) on my own. Lately, my mother has been researching autism, and she thinks I show many of the signs she's been learning about. I've been aware for a long time that I have some traits that are common among people with autism, but her interest in the topic has made me think that it might be worth finding out more. In particular, I'd like to learn about the strategies autistic people use to manage everyday tasks. I have constant difficulty caring for myself, and perhaps some of those strategies would help me, too.

Olly

Welcome to Wrong Planet. Pick a topic forum that applies and ask your questions. The more specific you can detail the question, the better the members will be able to respond with helpful (and sometimes non-helpful) answers.

Welcome to WP, Olly/Mathbeing.

Managing everyday tasks...wow. In my case, I hope for as few as possible. Which might not be a bad strategy. Start off with a short list of goals for the day that you know you can achieve and when you succeed at them, pat yourself on the back. And if you don't achieve them, don't beat yourself up. Therefore you can be encouraged to try again the next day. :D

And of course, whatever jimmy m recommends sounds wise.

Hello, Olly. Pleased to have you here.

First off, I advice you not to rush to conclusions. Don't self-diagnose. Seek professional help.

Also, bear in mind that every known autistic person in the planet is different. Symptoms from one person won't necessarily happen to another. Even if you find a thread that apparently speaks so much to you and makes too much sense, this doesn't mean the issue is necessarily related to autism somehow.

I hope you enjoy your stay. Welcome!

Yes, I certainly plan to discuss this with a professional.
