Hello,

I found this site recently and finally decided to introduce myself. I'm 44 and not diagnosed ASD. I fit the profile and online assessments strongly suggest I am. More importantly, I relate to what's said on this site and others. That's rare for me. I don't even feel like part of the Human race most of the time. I'm working towards getting a formal assessment, which I don't want and have resisted for years. It isn't just due to the stigma surrounding the label. I've been to counselors and psychiatrists before, and it was one bad experience after another. But also some of my best traits come from this part of me. I don't want what I like most about myself labeled as an illness. A formal diagnosis has become a necessity as I'm applying for SSDI. So we'll see where that goes. Anyway... I look forward to chatting with everyone.

Welcome DesertRat,

https://www.disabilitysecrets.com/topic ... -work.html
Here is a good page on getting SSDI. Most people are rejected the first time they apply.
But some get benefits on appeal or whatever that is called. Typically Social Security will have one of their doctors make an independent assessment. I had a partner that was on SSDI.

Welcome to Wrong Planet. I know the feeling of nothing ever quite fitting and then suddenly everything makes sense when one considers an aspie diagnosis. I also feel that some of the things I value in myself are, I now know, aspie traits. Well, that's okay. It's still who I am. I look forward to hearing more from you.

Welcome to wrong planet.

I found things people had written here that I've never heard of anyone else thinking other than me.
It felt like I was reading stories about my own experience, when I was searching through articles about Asperger's on the internet, and reading stories about childhood behaviours and series' of (mis)diagnosis.
I found a specialist in my area for my assessment, and the experience was good for me.
It took a while to get the assessment. It took a couple of years and several denials to get SSI.
It's been kind of a profound, ongoing experience for me.
