Been lurking for a few days and figured it was time to say hello. I've never been diagnosed but began realizing over the last year or two that Aspergers explains a WHOLE LOT about my personality. Took the little AQ quiz and scored a 43. I've always been pretty self-aware but turns out that this aspect has flown under my radar for quite a long time.
So here's my question: what are the benefits of a formal diagnosis? Other than an official proclamation, I'm not sure I see anything to gain.
And I'm only speaking for myself - one thing I believe I've picked up on already is the fact that this is something that manifests itself differently in different individuals, so your mileage may vary.
For people who struggle with everyday functioning, a formal diagnosis can help you qualify for disability services like Vocational Rehab or other such social welfare based programs in your town. It can help on the job if you have to learn a challenging new task and need accommodations or extra time to learn. The same with college or Vocational training.
