Hi everyone,

I’m Tony, 30 from England.
I’ve just been diagnosed with ASD (high functioning) yesterday.
It feels good but in a strange way. But now I’m unsure what to do next.
I feel myself questioning my personality: which aspects are autistic and which are ‘normal’?
Has anyone else experienced this after their diagnosis?

Thanks

Yes, me - and pretty much everyone else I've ever spoken to who was diagnosed later in life. It will ease over time as you come to understand your autism better, and talking to folks who've been through it in places such as this is the best thing you can do for that, IMHO.

Best wishes.

Welcome!

It may be useful to identify sources of stress in your life and figure out ways to reduce them.

For instance, I can't enjoy a movie if the sound is too loud, so I bought a pair of high fidelity earplugs to reduce the volume.

Thanks for the tips.

I have something similar with blocking out prominent background noise. I wear ear plugs for sleeping but I might take them with me for outings.

I strongly agree with this approach to life after getting the diagnosis. Never forget you are autistic. Drill it through your mind every day that tou are different than everybody else and that EVERYBODY you interact with KNOWS there is something wrong with you. Know your limitations and build on your strengths. Avoid painful or upsetting stimuli as much as possible and dare to live your life despite the diagnosis.
