Seriously-----there are a few Kiwis here. One of them is a very prominent person of this Site.

Don't you dare put me into your fruit salad!!

It's a pity----but I've never actually eaten a Kiwi in my life.

I like the climate of New Zealand---especially South Island (most of the time).

Christchurch can get a little cold, and it snows sometimes there.

It never snows in Auckland---and I believe, Wellington, too.

There are three kinds of kiwis:

1 The people for whom New Zealand is their home, their country, whether born here or not

2 New Zealand's wonderful (but shy and nocturnal) national bird (which is flightless and now very endangered due to the predation of them by species like stoats and so on introduced by the British colonisers in the 19th century)

3 The fruit, which until the 1970s in New Zealand was called "the Chinese Gooseberry". These then grew wild in back yards, and were not commercially farmed or sold in shops. This changed in the 1970s because...

.. the Chinese Gooseberry was suddenly renamed as "kiwifruit" for commercial exporting purposes, (and rich bankers got big tax breaks from lawmakers of the time for suddenly owning land they had planted with the Chinese Gooseberry Except that it was kiwifruit by then. It isn't a native fruit of New Zealand)

In the states, I was sometimes called a kiwi in the major cities of California, never in other parts of the USA (who tended to think I was British!! !)

It varies a lot. Auckland, the warmest overall city, does very rarely get snow.
Christchurch can surprise with marvellously warm days which start below zero degrees.
It is becoming more and more variable this decade.

I've heard "kiwifruit" versus "kiwi"----but I didn't know the Chinese connection.

I'm sorry you got that impression.

And I doubt very much that B19 had that intention, either. She has a good sense of humour. She's a very strong and staunch advocate for people on the Spectrum.

Please feel welcome, not ridiculed, because we weren't ridiculing you. I first posted to let you know that I too am a kiwi and then posted NZ information for the benefit of the USA members who make up the dominant number of members on this website many of whom have limited knowledge of New Zealand, who will be reading this thread too.

PS If you wish to start over, let me know as I can remove this thread and you can recreate it as a new one for new replies from other members, if that would make you feel more comfortable.

What a shame that there aren't "too many Kiwis" on this forum. I think the forum allows for people to meet in cyberspace.

I'm from Lower Hutt and retired after an active life in IT.

Although separated and not working there are a number of things that I enjoy: genealogy, playing bridge, reading (mostly non-fiction), watching documentaries and "infotainment", and writing. The writing part is not for publishing; it's rather a therapeutical way to try and understand my life.

Due to my IT background and my Aspergers, I'm quite black and white: the light is either off or on; a statement is either true or false, et cetera. I am unable to answer a closed question without a simple "yes" or "no", hence not fit to be or become a politician.

I am very organised and structured. I'm love to puzzle (hard Sudoku/KenKen), solving problems and organising events. The latter is the main reason for posing the question in this thread, since there are NO adult meet-up groups in the Wellington area. And I would love to talk to like-minded people, share experiences and learn from them.

Now that you know a bit more about me, please share a few details about yourself.
