Hi everyone, I am 43 years old and a mother of two young adults diagnosed on the spectrum. I was diagnosed about 12 years ago, and it has been a long, painful road to gain understanding and acceptance. My 20-year-old son was diagnosed at age 8, and my 18-year-old daughter was diagnosed at age 14. Is there a regional area on this board to get to know others and get resources?

Right now I am most concerned with helping my son fit into the community in Washington State (near Seattle). That's where I grew up, but without me there I'm not sure how he is going to survive long enough to train for and find a computer programming job (though he is working with Voc Rehab). It seems all low-income units have a 2-5 year waiting list, or it's $1K just to rent a room from someone in a regular house. He has been reluctant to join social groups or find any kind of support. That's mainly why I'm on this forum.

I look forward to becoming active on this forum again. It has been about 5 years since I visited it.

Hi and welcome back :). Sorry to hear it’s been hard finding acceptance and understanding since your diagnosis. Does your son have any family support at all in Seattle, or is he trialling life on his own completely? Can understand your concerns. My youngest is moving out on his own for Uni in September and has my support while he chooses to experience life on campus, living there in London. I’m not too far away though, but expect he’ll be just fine. I’ve managed to hunt down some resources for you to keep handy just in case. I understand he doesn’t feel the need for social supports etc, and that truly is his choice. I was the same. Had to make it on my own. Wish you and your family the best. Good to have you back with us. xx
