Hi Folks,

Hope you are all well and you had a nice Christmas.

Since I'm new on these forums, I thought I should say hello and a few things about myself.

I'm male, almost 45, and live in the UK.

I've known since at least my teens that I am somehow different – or at least, this is what I perceive – to many other people. Actually, the expression "being on the wrong planet" captures very well how I feel.

Basically, I very recently took a load of online high functioning autism tests, and I scored well into "Aspie" territory for all of them.

I won't at this point go into detail about my specific traits – I'll do that in the main forum – but anyway, based on these tests and my own history, including what my family members report of my childhood behaviour, I feel fairly confident that I likely have high functioning autism.

Anyway, in order to test this hypothesis, I am being diagnosed by a private (i.e. fee-collecting) clinician next month.

I'll keep y'all posted on what she says.

Happy New Year from the UK!

Welcome and happy New Year to you as well. I think scheduling a professional assessment will be a positive move for you regardless of the outcome. You're going about things the way that most of us adults have done with doing online testing first. In my opinion it's important also to do things as you have in your first post by making it known that at this point you're self-diagnosed. Good job on that. Occasionally and unlike you, some new members will declare themselves as definitively autistic when they have not been professionally diagnosed which isn't a correct way to go about things.

Hi Folks,

I have just received a formal diagnosis of Autistic Spectrum Disorder (what the clinician says would have been called Asperger Syndrome in previous times).

It was well worth the time and money to pursue the diagnosis even though I am in my 40s.

Good to hear from you! It’s a big deal, finally having that confirmation. Hope you’re coping alright, and that as time goes on, it only confirms for you, that you are a unique and valuable part of this planet. Thanks for returning and giving us an update. 8)

Many thanks, Juliette. Well, I'm surviving, thanks, now I can start looking at what support resources are available to me locally, as well as books and similar.
I've always felt a bit like an alien visitor to this planet, so it's useful to finally get confirmed why that is so!
Hope you are doing fine, too.
