Hello everyone.

Not quite sure how to start but wanted to say hello.
I've recently been clinically diagnosed on the NHS (via an adult autism unit) with Autism/Aspergers(high functioning) at the age of 35, after several years of wondering, growing realisation and several life/general crises and burnouts.

I'm still very much processing things and attempting to educate myself in the way my autism effects me and other women and girls in particular. Looking back over my life thus far it's retrospectively quite obvious particularly looking back at some of my struggles in my childhood and teens and nowadays I'd likely get diagnosed much younger but it is what it is! The Autism centre have been lovely and are offering quite a bit of post diagnostic support and have been giving me information and suggesting different online resources (including this website!)

It's been a pretty emotional and intense process (esp during lock down!) but reassuring as well as I start to understand more.

More generally about myself I love Art both making and observing, esp drawing. I also create a lot of freehand embroidery, usually inspired by nature. I love The Bronte Sisters, classic literature, mystery novels, ghost stories, museums, all things Victorian culture, true crime, cats, cemeteries and collecting.

I'm looking forward to learning more about my own diagnosis and interacting and learning of other peoples experiences and points of view.

Many thanks
A x

A warm welcome to our planet! May your stay be long and happy. You're sure to find folk here with the same or similar interests to (most of) those you mention... Certainly cats are quite popular around here.

What are their names? Some cats have very creative names based on their looks or personality.

Welcome to WP! We share a few interests - I love cats, particularly my kitty Agatha (named for the author Agatha Christie, one of my favorites as I do like mystery novels myself). I hope you are able to continue understanding more about yourself and how you respond to the world around you through learning more about autism (I'm glad you have a centre you can visit). I definitely have spent a lot of time learning since I was diagnosed and it's been very helpful.

The cats are Grace (Gracie) a three-legged black cat, lovely but a massive diva and mum to Lils her daughter also black but four legged.

A very warm welcome to you, A :)! Congrats on getting through the assessment in these times. Good to hear you’re being well supported post-diagnosis by the Autism centre. I share many of your interests(cats - I have 2 ragdolls ), enjoy creating via sewing, embroidery, quilting, literature, ghost stories, true crime and Victorian culture. Thanks to a member and good friend here, have created a train layout and am creating a Welsh town, complete with castle, beach, military base with spitfires and vehicles from 1940s Britain(lots of art involved and scratchbuilding which is soo much fun!).

It’s a huge deal being diagnosed and coming to terms, making sense of your past and hopefully going forward with a better, clearer understanding of what you need to make a good life for yourself. Good to have you with us and hope you feel at home here in no time. xx

Wow! That sounds amazing. I've been doing a lot of embroidery during lockdown, mostly a mixture of reptiles, alot of poison dart frogs and some animal skulls, I enjoy both the creating and find it relaxing as well. As well as lots of podcast listening (predominantly true crime, mystery or unexplained based!)

Have been enjoying the British library tales of the weird short story collections, there are quite a few of them now with different themes, One all about train stories!
