Hello,

I just signed up to get more info. I think I was misdiagnosed with Aspergers as I have friends,can hold down a job without assistance. First of all I am 19(will be turning 20 on July 26th). I got an AA degree in Social Science,a certificate in Sociology and Deans Award. I will be doing a distance learning BA program with the University of Illinois in Liberal Studies. I can't leave California and my friends. I have lots of family in California that I can't leave behind. In my opinion I feel that I am Neurotypical. I have read so many books on the subject. A psychologist at my high school said I had Aspergers but I tend to disagree with her. I was a TA in my high schools main office for almost two years,I was another TA for my high school's Special Day Class and now I am volunteering at my Community College in their Adaptive PE water exercose program. I would like to go into the field of Special Education after I figure out my educational goals.

I have reconnected with a friend with whom I had not seen in years. I have other friends that I keep in touc h with. Although we are busy I try to e-mail them and talk on the phone. A few of my former high school teachers became close friends. I was quite popular at my high school. I had such a good time during my high school career. I did not need a lot of support services in college because I was able to do a lot of the work online. I still do PE through the Supported Ed program to work on my motor skills and because I get individualized attention.

So I hope your summer is off to a great start. I happen to enjoy traveling. I go independently to my grandparents quite a bit. This summer I have booked myself on Amtrak. I love planning and booking trips. I returned from a youth group tour in Israel back in Januaray. I love going to Hawaii(I'm so obsessed with Hawaii that I went there 3 years in a row).I also love listening to soft music such as Motown and Easy Listening. It keeps me going . I work through stressful moments by exercising and listening to music.

So I hope I gave you a good introduction. I'm looking forward to being an actice participant in your board.

Welcome to Wrongplanet - you are most welcome here! To tell you the truth, I believe it is quite difficult to be misdiagnosed with AS as the diagnostic criteria are ill-defined! No-one with Asperger's seems to be the same - stating the obvious somewhat perhaps. I too have some friends, and my ex high-school teachers would number among them - most of them are significantly [20yrs or so] older than myself. Gillberg's criteria for Asperger Disorder states that having trouble relating to peers is a major point - peers referring to someone of around about the same age.

Here is Gillberg's Criteria for diagnosing AS - this is applied more than that found in the DSM 4:

GILLBERG'S CRITERIA FOR ASPERGER'S DISORDER

Severe impairment in reciprocal social interaction
(at least two of the following)
(a) inability to interact with peers
(b) lack of desire to interact with peers
(c) lack of appreciation of social cues
(d) socially and emotionally inappropriate behavior

All-absorbing narrow interest
(at least one of the following)
(a) exclusion of other activities
(b) repetitive adherence
(c) more rote than meaning

Imposition of routines and interests
(at least one of the following)
(a) on self, in aspects of life
(b) on others

Speech and language problems
(at least three of the following)
(a) delayed development
(b) superficially perfect expressive language
(c) formal, pedantic language
(d) odd prosody, peculiar voice characteristics
(e) impairment of comprehension including misinterpretations of literal/implied meanings

Non-verbal communication problems
(at least one of the following)
(a) limited use of gestures
(b) clumsy/gauche body language
(c) limited facial expression
(d) inappropriate expression
(e) peculiar, stiff gaze

Motor clumsiness: poor performance on neurodevelopmental examination
(All six criteria must be met for confirmation of diagnosis

The list is DSM number 4. I hear now we are on number 5? Is there any difference?
