Hello,

I am from Nartar, well, that is what I like to think.

I am a self-diagnosed high-functioning autistic, I study clinical/abnormal psychology and Philosophy at the University of Alberta in Canada. With great concern for my very own being, I have spent hours in the University of Alberta library reading articles and books on Autism only to figure out that they really don't know much about it (or about the human mind for that matter).

I also play a lot of guitar and write music. I have sequenced two albums in the past 4 months and am in the process of recording the first one. My band's name is Floppy Dick Drive and you will be hearing from us someday soon. My friend, who has spearheaded the band with me as the editor/producer, can easily be diagnosed as an Aspie.

Anyway, nobody in my family has a clue, they just think I am weird and I kind of like it this way. I did not speak until I was three; however, I grunted a little, but no coherent speech. I feel extremely lucky that my parents had a laissez faire attitude towards me as I feel interference as a young child will only hinder and possibly severly affect the 'autistic' child. But that's just my truth.

I feel that my 'autistic' traits were chosen and uncovered by me. As a child I was rather social; however, I began to enjoy solitary activities and found that I just cannot get as much done if I chose to be a social person.

Either way, I feel like I chose to be this way and that I am not actually "ill" or "disordered". I feel and think that most psychiatry is just a bunch of constructed labels with fancy names dealing with clusters of symptoms that are attached to odd people in an attempt to understand them and control them.

I found this site and thought it would be interesting to talk to other people 'like' me.

Anyway, I await your response and am interested in your thoughts. I have a lot to say and my thoughts are plenty.

Best Regards,

Adam B.

Hello and welcome to WP.

I'll be able to tell people I knew you before your band became famous!

I have 3 sons - 2 with Asperger's and I wouldn't change a thing. They stimulate my mind and have taught me there's more than 1 way to think/be.

Helen

hahahahha hilarious..........

When it comes to Psychology I like to study clinical/abnormal Psychology (obvious) as well as the more recent experimental/existential developments that are inspired by philosophers such as Kierkegaard and Sartre which deal with the development of the self/individual (you could call this the human soul). Foucault, Lacan, RD Laing, you know the thinkers that are opposed to modern psychiatry, or should I say the dead end. I have a lot of ideas and thoughts I like to share.

Someday I might become a registered clinical psychiatrist so I can diagnose myself (as I sure as hell am not gonna let some stooge who has no clue who I am do it).

Indeed the experts are way off, one day I would really like to see the DSM rewritten from the 'patient/clients' point of view.
