Hi,

I'm a male in my early 50's and, while I've recognized that I fit the pop culture stereotype of an aspie, it never clicked how much of my life that explains until I started reading about peoples' experiences with ASD.

I'm currently a lawyer, but my first career was in a niche field with a lot of science, engineering, and computer programming--in both cases aspie characteristics have probably been a benefit, but not understanding this has led to a lot of anxiety too. I've just started to talk to a counselor about it, so we will see where it goes.

Hello and welcome.

Sorry to hear you've had anxiety to deal with. Hopefully counseling can help with that. I might sure you'll find no shortage of people here who can relate. Again, welcome.

Welcome to WP. I think you'll find some nice folk here.

I've read that ASD folk are often attracted to Information Technology (IT). In my case, I knew virtually nothing about autism and had not even heard of the Autism Spectrum until 2019. By that time I had retired twice from IT. I thought having been around computers since 1971 had affected how I thought. It turns out that may have been backwards, that I'd been hanging around computers since 1971 because of how I thought.

It sounds like you have not been formally diagnosed, yet. If you go that path: enjoy! I thought the assessment was kind of fun--and it was amusing that some parts were clearly designed for children. After the diagnosis I still had all of the same quirks, but now the quirks have pedigrees.

Hi and welcome to Wrong Planet. Your story sounded like someone I know but I checked his age and he is older than you. Are you a IP attorney, as my friend is now? I hadn't considered he might be an aspie, but he was an engineer and talked about social problems. He found it easy to get dates, since he was attractive and had an easy going suave personality (by engineer standards ), but they would never go anywhere. My guess was they found him to be uninteresting and lacking ambition.

No, but the field of law is broad enough I bet a lot of aspies can find a niche.
