Figured I'd jump in and introduce myself. I'm 95% sure I have AS, but will never, ever go get a diagnosis...because I'm a pilot and think it'll probably jeopardize my medical certificate.

I always wondered what was wrong with me, and chalked it up to being a military brat who never learned how to make friends...but when I was surfing online one day, I ran across an AS website and thought, "Wow, that's ME!".

Unlike some seem to, I really don't embrace this at all. I want to be normal. Ok, so I really "act" quite normal( e.g., got a degree, hold a professional job, and date), but the more I think about it, I'm really mimicking what I see other people do.

I hate it.

So yeah, that's my intro.

Hi I'm new also, Yeah I "Act" normal too, except I don't care much about dating. I'v given up, don't know anyone intrested in the "weird lady w/ the autistic daughter", don't think thats in high demand right now. But I ENJOY being alone so it's cool However the girls at work know n I'm weird and tell me I consistantly give "The Acadamy Award Performance" cause I'm really good at "playing the game" when my bills depend on it. :D

Hi Star pilot and welcome :)

I know, it's a difficult thing to do (telling), specially if you think it could put your job in danger.

I am borderline AS/NT as well.

"NT" is the term we use on here to describe normal people. It stands for neurotypical

Yeah, I've only really ever told my mom. She got furious with me one day because I "didn't know how" to call a tow truck. She told me how she didn't understand how a 25 year old college graduate who had lived on her own for years didn't know how to do something so simple. The next morning, I emailed her some links with a not so nice email saying, "THIS is why I don't know how to do something unless I've seen someone else do it and can mimic it!! !!". Her response was to try to teach me how to chit-chat, which was more annoying than anything else.

As far as the job goes, I don't fly for a living, but I freelance flight instruct and fly for a certain SAR organization who shall remain nameless right now. I jumped some HUGE hurdles, AS-wise, to get to both those places and don't need it taken away, that's for sure!

Yeah, it's an odd thing to be able to do some complex stuff, but at the same time have a huge difficulty doing something like making a call
I did some designs to a client recently, and HE called me to say "hey, come for the money!"

About the mimicking, lately I've been watching TV to see other people's reactions, trying to analyze them :P hehe. Hopefully some will stay :)

Hi, Star,
Welcome to Wrong Planet. I think you will like it here.
I, too, have avoided any sort of official diagnosis. I don't want to be pigeon holed into a rigid definition by some pompous medical official and have any record of "what is wrong" with me.
I am schizoid, introverted, and as a child was much more aspy than I am now. It is hard for others to understand how someone so bright can at the same time be so ret*d. This was particularly frustrating and hard to understand for my mother. She angrily told me I was socially ret*d when I was in my teens; well, duh!
In social interactions I try to copy what I see works for other people. Like, when to smile, ect. But it is harder work than traveling in a foreign land and not knowing the native tongue!
Ergo, Wrong Planet!
