Hi everyone

At the beginning of this year I found out that my daughter has high functioning autism. I never thought there was anything wrong with her and still don't but didn't know about ASD. Since then I have realised that I am probably AS myself and getting more sure as I find out more. It takes a bit to get use to. It makes sense but also I don't feel like I have a disability. I wonder if other people knew would they think differently about me? Though most people that have met me think I am strange anyway LOL.

I have always known that I am different than other people. There were and still are alot of things I don't understand and feel isolated often. I would love to chat to other people that think more like I do.

I live in Australia and create children's clothing. Must also say I am female :D one of the few ;)

Hi

I was just reading some of your posts on other threads. I have just started reading the Australian thread. So many interesting things to read. I think I could be on here all day. My house is already a mess no need to get off the computer to tidy it :P I should however be working which I enjoy doing but just lack momentum.

I am in Brisbane. I am a strange AS I want to have close friends. I know alot of people to say hello at shopping centres but never anything more. Would love some friends that think like me.

Is your avatar picture you? If so you look alot like my dh lol. Both cute  :P If you don't mind me saying so and yes I am happily married :D

Welcome!
I am a AS mum with an AS son.
I have just been newly diagnosed this week actually, at the Minds and Hearts clinic in Brisbane.
When my son was diagnosed, I also began to look at myself, my childhood and my experiences, and recently decided that I would like to seek diagnosis.

How old is your daughter? My AS son is 20 and was diagnosed when he was 18. His diagnosis was probably a little late, mostly due to my thought that there wasn't anything 'wrong', it was more that he was 'just like me'!
I, like you would probably like to have more close friends, but I do find making friends pretty impossible.

Oh, and I think you might find that Quartermass's avatar is actually Gaspard Ulliel from the movie Hanibal risisng.
(Yes, very cute!)

No, that is not my picture, that is Gaspard Ulliel playing Hannibal Lecter in Hannibal Rising. I look more like Dylan Moran. :P

I occasionally go up to Brisbane, but not often, usually just for the Lifeline Bookfest.

There is a surprising amount of Australians here. Indeed, there is almost an entire family from Brisbane on Wrong Planet, consisting of nannarob, Smelena, and a couple of kids (forgot their names, how embarassing... ).

Okay :) I don't remember peoples faces so it can be a problem LOL. Though I have never seen Hannibal Rising. I should be the one embrassed lol. I have no idea who Dylan Moran is either.

We go to the Bookfest too. Except last time all hell broke loose around here and we totally forgot.

My daughter is turning 5 this month. Her behavioiur can be quite extreme so it got noticed by carers at kindy and daycare. Also I think it gets picked up quicker than it use to. She has been going to early intervention which has helped alot.

Would love to meet you Shivani. It doesn't matter if we stare at each other for awhile LOL. I get shy around people I don't know. I think it makes it easier realising that the other person may not say all the right things, etc. You know all the chit chat that people are suppose to say to each other.

I get shy and nervous too, but I have a few stratergies worked out that can sometimes make it easier when meeting people. But yes, it is the knowing what to say, when to say and how to say it, that always seems so difficult for me!

It would be great to 'chat' to you tho'...
Feel free to pm me. :)

Thanks :D for the pic. Not that it means much to me unfortunately. Bla I like being me but it can be a pain some times. I am over wanting to be someone else though.

Thanks for all the welcomes I think I will be right at home around here :D I don't have to be careful what I say to make sure it makes sense or includes what it is suppose to. Yay some freedom.

Your real, genuine friends won't think of you any differently. You are still the same person!
Those that do treat you differently if you tell them you have AS are either not true friends, or are people who have a bad and even prejudiced attitude to those who are different. You are better off without such people in your life.

Regarding the not remembering faces thing, I have face-blindness (prosopagnosia) too.

Firstly what friends  I think I will tell some but perhaps not others; most are online.

Yeah the face thing is strange. I usually try to remember whether they have long or short hair, beard etc so at least then I have some idea what they look like when I see them again. So that way when I have to meet a particular person I then just recall these things before meeting them. It is strange though. There is no way I could do one of those police face things. Thanks for the info. I never really thought about it before just excepted it.

Not what I meant. More that people often say that there are more ASD males than females. Nice to meet you prof :)
