Hi,

I'm a 28 year old male who lives in Holland (which explains my sometimes poor English). I was diagnosed with Asperger's Syndrome in 2005, and - more recently - also with a mild case of ADD. Apart from this, I have also had a psychosis a few years ago, but luckily that's all past now, although I am still prescribed medication against psychosis just to be sure.

It still puzzles me that my Asperger's was never discovered sooner. But then again, I guess I've always been kind of an actor. I wasn't "normal" (whatever that may be), but I pretended to be and everyone around me just fell for it. Not that they didn't notice that something was "strange" about me, which of course they did, but I guess they just thought I was a little eccentric.

As for my occupation, I'm a PhD student, and most of the time I work on my thesis (which is in the field of legal philosophy). In my spare time I enjoy reading, watching movies and playing computer games. I also have a kind-of obsession for motorcycles. I don't own one, but maybe in the future I will.

I've been active on a Dutch forum about Asperger's for quite a while, of which I am still a member, but lately the atmosphere has turned a little sour there (because, among other things, of a persistent troll problem), and besides I would like to improve my English. WP seems perfect to me, because of its large scale (more than 10,000 members, wow!) and, having already read a little on WP, the atmosphere seems very pleasant!

Nice to meet you! :)

I'm not sure your English could be improved much further - that reads a lot better than my posts do sometimes. :) I shouldn't worry. :D

Welcome to WP. :D

I wouldn't bother working on your English. Carry it to far, and you'll become unintelligibly periloquacious, like what I is are am erm.

Welcome Nafydalgol.

PS. And is that one of my favourite languages, luking in there? Algol.

PPS. "Periloquacious" ought to be, but is not in the OED. I like inventing words.

Welcome Nafydalgol.

Thanks!

Periloquacious...
I could put up with being unintelligibly periloquacious... as long as I'm not immeasurably metaverbose!

That's just a coincidence. My alias, read backwards, spells Log Lady Fan. Log Lady is a character from Twin Peaks, the series by David Lynch. This Log Lady has the strange habit of carrying a log around, everywhere she goes.

welcome. I do the acting thingy too. you would be surprised how far it can take you. Yes, it seems people can pick out the strange in others. That's what makes us not so much weird, but rather in a type of biological guild.

Hi Nafydalgol and welcome

I'm another one who has effectively been acting 'normal' a lot of the time (after 40 years of practice I even convince myself sometimes.I just wish I had better scripts !) .Your English is so good that for a moment I thought you were just pretending to be from Holland

Thanks dawndeleon and pluto!

I'm glad my English is comprehensible. :D I often read books in English to improve it, but I rarely actually get to speak (or write) it - so it's a relief to know that I'm making sense.

About the acting: looking back, I realize that I constantly tried to do all the things that were expected of me in any given situation. While other people (without Asperger's) seem to have some innate talent for that and do it "off the cuff", I had to keep pushing myself to the limit. Which can be so exhausting (maybe you'll recognize this!). In my case, it's probably what caused that psychosis to occur.

Being officialy diagnosed as Aspie was in a way a relief. Finally I got an excuse to be myself and not constantly pretend anymore. And, after 26 years, I found out that I wasn't the only person in the world that had these problems! What still bothers me though, is that not all non-Aspies are understanding the limitations of an Aspie. Most of them still think I'm just being lazy or weird, even after they're told the situation. Most people simply don't believe it, because I don't rock backwards and forwards like Rain Man, or talk about K-Mart all the time. :?

Hi Nafydalgol!

It seems like we have a lot in common! I used to pretend to be normal too; I was an actress-type person who can still act if I want to, but I don't want to anymore, thank God (and maybe my antidepressant). People also didn't think I had AS because I "don't act that wierd". One person said that you couldn't tell with me; another said that I was perfectly normal and didn't need medication, not even antidepressants (I really did need my antidepressant at the time and am still taking it), another said when someone remarked that I was thinking of going on disability "Why? There's nothing wrong with her, is there?" :D I LOVE bragging about that. I know it's nothing to brag about. :)

You're from Holland? I've been to Amsterdam. I loved it; it was so lively and unique and I hope to go back to see more of it. Have you been to the house of Anne Frank? I have. Anne Frank (and the whole Holocaust) are some of my huge obsessions. It was such a compelling story!

I like watching disaster flicks, and flicks on international incidents, and reading disaster books, and books that are either about international incidents or are international incidents (in the case of Harry Potter). I'm turning into a really "out there" type of person which is why I want to return to Amsterdam at some point! :D I hope to see you around here!

I know what you mean. I'm also on disability (although I still work a little bit), while on the outside I don't really appear disabled (it's not like I'm in a wheel chair or anything). But turns out that some people who hear about my being on disability, actually become jealous of me! They're like "wow, I wish I was on disability too" - which makes me think: well, if you want to trade places with me, fine, but when you take over my disability check you should also take over my disability! It should be an equal exchange, and not just the best bits.

I haven't been in the Anne Frank House (being a Dutchman... I know, shame on me   ), but I have read her diary. I find it hard to imagine what life must have been like for persons in hiding back then. I think you're right, it's a compelling story.

There's been sort of a disaster in the city where I live, in 1807, when a gunpowder-ship exploded. It was international news then. There is some information about that on this website.
