My name is Bess. My youngest sister was diagnosed with Aspergers early in life. We are 16 years apart in age, and we are such different people that it never occurred to me that I might be autistic too. Ends up, I am.
I was diagnosed with ASD at 36, and I have been learning about autism and looking for community ever since. I've read several books (both fiction and nonfiction) about autism, and I've discovered a few podcasts by people on the spectrum that I enjoy. I'm happy to share what I've found if you're interested, but I won't list anything here because I think that is against the rules.
I'm still discovering what being autistic means for me, but overall, I would say that learning I'm autistic has helped me:
- Embrace myself more fully
- Redefine past traumas
- Celebrate the enormous growth I've experienced throughout my life
- Accept the things about myself I cannot change
- Figure out what kind of support/accommodations I need to reach my goals
Other than that, I recently graduated with my first college degree, and I just transferred to an amazing liberal arts university where I'll be working on my bachelors in computer science. I have been happily married for the last 4 years. We have two dogs that I love dearly. I'm a volunteer with a local LGBTQIA+ group in my area. I love the arts, and one of my special interests is science fiction and fantasy.
Thanks for reading!
