Hi all,
just joined. Looks like a good place to be.
I was diagnosed a few months back after my son was diagnosed earlier this year. He and I have always 'got' each other so I went to chat to someone at the centre where his therapist is, kinda like a 'well I'll just go and ask, can't imagine I'm actually autistic too, probably just 'get' him as I've lived with him his whole life'. I've now learned about masking and my diagnosis has been a revelation to me, finally making sense of my world for me. But also a bit of a roller coaster.
Anyway, 'hi', and thanks for having me here.
CeN :)

Hi CeN,
I am not diagnosed yet, but I am quite sure to be on the spectrum. I have no children, but I have always had the feeling you describe with my niece. And my advises were very valuable for my sister who doesn’t get her. I’ve always “felt” her and sometimes we say the same things! I thought it was because we are relatives, but I am starting to think she’s an Aspie too. However, I can’t tell her parents, not yet. Probably if I get diagnosed I will. I’d just like to spare her some of my difficulties and suffering.
Best,
Mm

Hi CeN,

Welcome!

In many places a diagnosis isn't helpful for getting any assistance with anything.

But, knowing you are on the spectrum someplace can be very useful for avoiding bad places.
Sometimes shopping in stores can be overwhelming. I'll just put away the stuff in my basket and go home.

Hi, I'm a newbie myself but so far have received a warm welcome here. If this can be of any help: the part I like about having a formal dx is in the details of all the tests undertaken. Eg: I score high on alexythimia and systemizing. Awareness of these details has helped me to reorganize my life according to my "limitations" and try to turn these into assets. Dx or not I wish you peace and meaning on that road to awareness.

Diagnosing ASD in others after one's own diagnosis is a seemingly irresistible temptation to some of us. I know it afflicts me strongly, and I haven't yet been able to overcome my instinct to "spread the knowledge".

At the very least one must be cautious about how one selects and approaches potential "disciples", of course, and that's the rub...
