Countdown to Moving

I expect to be moving in about a week.

Closing on the new (to me--actually a 1928 Tudor Revival) house is scheduled for February 1st.

The mortgage company keeps asking for things (like 3 months worth of bank statements to prove my spousal support is paid on time--even though their disclosure forms said explicitly that I didn't have to list spousal support in my assets!)

I find them both sloppy and demanding, but I don't argue because I just want this to go smoothly.

Here's hoping everything goes well, and that my interest rate will be lower than anticipated.

I wish you well on your new home. I remember back in the 70s when the interest rates on homes rose so much with a variable interest rate that one of the families that I knew lost their new home. It had risen to the 20% annual interest rate and no one could survive a new home with a variable interest rate at the level.

Yeah, variable rates can be dangerous.

Although, arguably this would be a good time to take one. They generally are lower than the going rate, and are fixed for the first five years.

As high as rates are now, it could be a better deal. Whether to grab a future lower rate, or ameliorate a rising one, you could refinance to a fixed rate before the variability clicks in.

I had achieved a lovely--very very low rate in 2021 on my current home.

But the badlands of divorce placed me in a spot where I need to move...now.

I'm going closer to one of my adult sons. He is a softwear engineer who works remotely and is only in the area to be close to his step children for a few more years (as they reach adulthood and fly away).

Cleveland not being dreamland for either of us, we will both likely move again within 5 to 10 years (ostensibly to said dreamland) so this purchase is also eyed as an investment.

In the meantime, it's a charming home and I look forward to decorating and landscaping.

Purging and packing from a 34 year home, and in Winter---not so fun--but it feels like a fresh beginning.

Update....Loan approved, still on track for closing/ keys 2/1/24!

Unrequested update....

So, all was going smoothly until the title company found that the seller owes the water company $1500+.
Here, the water bill follows the property, not the person.

Dufus seller is arguing that he paid the water bill as part of his taxes (umm, no. It doesn't work that way) and won't agree to the title company escrowing enough of his profits to cover the bill while he argues--unsuccessfully--with the water company.

Meanwhile I have changed all utilities in my name & transfered wifi, etc from the old place as per advice and the expected closing (this morning).

In the end, I had to agree to a contractual addendum giving him 30 days to resolve his problem or pay me damages.

I have a feeling I'll be filing in small claims court in 30 days--but that is less damaging than reversing everything at this point.

Now if the Realtor will just show up to take the lock box off the door so I don't have to break in to the house I now own.

Once in, the rest of my afternoon is about changing locks and measuring for curtains.

I guess that's progress.
