I'm doing a report about pet rats and my teacher told me i should talk to other people who have kept them so does anyone here have pet rats.

I have 2 of them which i love like my own children, does anyone else have any?

I apologize if this doesn't belong here I thought it might because it involves pets.

I use to raise and sell them, my children have had them as pets. They are wonderful pets, I want to get one again. They are playful and are full of personality. Sad thing is they only live to be about 3 years old.

Thanks that alone helps alotbecause its not just be saying they're good pets. :D you can't imagine how much this helps :D
um what do you think of their personality and once their tamed do they often bite, and are they hard to potty train?

( I'm supposed to ask questions but not as much as its an interview and i'm supposed to talk to several people)

Hi...when I was a young girl, I had several pet rats. I really enjoyed them.
My first one was a beige and white one. I think I had a couple of
albino ones as well after that first one died. It's been so long I
forgot his name. They were all very affectionate and easy to take care of.

When my son was young, I got him a pet rat who was the sweetest
creature you would ever want to meet. Her name was Nickey. He also
had a little white mouse that bit the heck out of anyone who would hold
her. Nickey though, she would lick and nuzzle us. We really loved
her, but then she got a big tumor and passed away after her short life
of 3 years. We buried her on the side of the yard and mourned her
for quite a while.

Had a bunch. They are the sweetest of
rodents, as pets. Can even be trained to
not excrete until put back in their cage.

Had one which used to clean my teeth. :P

I have had several rats as pets my first wes a big white lab rat called Emily (as in "See Emily Play") she was very efectionate. Much later I inherited a rat from someone I was squatting with (he rwturned to his home country South Africa) again a very efectionate rat who lived i an open aquarium with some sand on the bottom. Ratty would staair out my freinds dog from on top of his aquerium :) Recently I had a pair of rats rescued from a naibour who had bought them to breed for snake food :( I called them David and Victoria they never were comfertable being handled and therfor not very efectionate.

Rats are good pets but they should become used to being handled when young and do require daily attention to be happy.

Our daughter 'had' one when she was younger.
We all took care of it though.

I would agree that they are a social type of animal, and so, fun to be around.

Ours wound up with a growth of some sort and eventually died.

I hear rats do wind up with growths(cancer?) often.

I forgot to mention, in the 70's there was two very popular horror movies involving rats. These rats would attack and eat people, well thats what it looked like. Actually according to the trainers, the rats would eat peanut butter off the people, but it looked like they were eating the people. So I use to put peanut butter on me and act like my rats were eating me......ok I was a strange kid.

I love how a lot of horror films
use rats, and show them cleaning
themselves, which is really just
a sign that they are nervous. :P

I not only had pet rats as a kid, I had an invasion of wild rats in my cellar. I discovered the wild rats were just as nice as the tame rats. Unfortunately the wild rats multiplied at a high rate and chewed holes in everything and tore up my books to make their nests. So I had to get rid of them but I felt terrible about it. The wild rats did not bite or attack but merely wanted something to eat and a place to build their nests. But it is impossible to have them in a house.

We have had pet rats in the past, and have one now. They can be potty trained. They can learn their names and some basic commands. They are very playful and seem to be quite affectionate - we've even had one stop eating and starve itself to death when its mate died. They do get bored, so providing them some mental stimulation is helpful. They seem to like to solve puzzles.

For more, you might try visiting the website of the American Rat and Mouse Association (might be American Mouse and Rat Association). Good luck with your paper!
